Lynda Shackleford, the Johannesburg Councillor for Ward 103, has recently turned her attention to addressing growing concerns surrounding the activities at the Ballyclare Garden Refuse Site, situated at the intersection of Ballyclare Road and Winnie Mandela Drive. Responsible for overseeing key areas including Bryanston East, Benmore, and Sandton CBD, Lynda is keen to tackle issues affecting the area.

A pressing issue highlighted by Lynda is the improper dumping of items at the Ballyclare Garden Refuse Site. Contrary to its intended purpose for garden refuse, the site has become a hotspot for the disposal of bulk waste items. This has led to the proliferation of street-side vendors selling second-hand goods, flouting City of Johannesburg by-laws and attracting undesirable elements to the area.

While acknowledging the entrepreneurial spirit of these individuals, Lynda emphasizes the paramount importance of adhering to municipal regulations. She urges residents and businesses from the surrounding areas to desist from depositing bulky waste items such as golf clubs, kayaks, sofas, and appliances at the Ballyclare site. Instead, she encourages them to utilize the free Pikitup Bulky Waste Service, launched in 2015 to facilitate the monthly removal of bulky household waste.

The overarching goal of this service is to divert recyclable waste away from landfills, thereby prolonging their lifespan and promoting environmental sustainability. Residents are encouraged to contact their nearest Pikitup depots for the proper disposal of bulky waste items.
