Johannesburg Councillor for Ward 103, Lynda Shackleford, responsible for overseeing areas including Bryanston East, Benmore, and Sandton CBD, has addressed concerns regarding street vendors and traders operating outside the St John’s United Church at the corner of Benmore and Pam roads in Sandton. While acknowledging the entrepreneurial spirit of these individuals, Lynda emphasizes the importance of adhering to the City of Johannesburg’s by-laws.

According to Lynda, hawkers trading without permits are in violation of city regulations. She advises street vendors to apply for permits from the city council to operate legally within Johannesburg. The process involves submitting an application for a lease or allocation of a stand, ensuring compliance with designated trading areas, and refraining from conducting business directly alongside places of worship.

City officials are authorized to remove and impound any property used or intended for informal trading in restricted or prohibited areas. However, they must provide traders with detailed receipts itemizing the impounded property.

By obtaining permits and adhering to by-laws, vendors can contribute positively to the community while operating within legal parameters. Lynda remains committed to ensuring the orderly and lawful conduct of street trading activities within Ward 103 and surrounding areas.
