The Protea team from South Africa showcased their shearing prowess on the global stage at the Golden Shears 2023 World Sheep Shearing Championships, often referred to as the ‘Olympics’ of shearing and wool handling. Arriving a week early, the team practiced shearing the Scottish Black Face, Mules, and Cheviots, mastering the art of handling these formidable breeds.

The competition, hosting 53 hand shearers, 56 machine shearers, and 56 wool handlers from 29 countries, truly embraced international participation. In the hand shearing category, Bonile and Zwelamakhosi delivered an exciting final, securing first and second place respectively, both individually and as a team. Their outstanding performance not only earned them individual shearing prizes but also the accolade for the best hand shearing team. Adorned with the Protea emblem and sponsored by Chemuniqué, the team proudly represented South Africa on the global podium.

Beyond the competing team, South Africa’s expertise shone through with Christo Geldenhuys judging in the hand shearing finals and Karen Lee in the wool handling finals. Congratulations to the Protea team for their remarkable achievements at the 2023 World Sheep Shearing Championships, bringing honor and recognition to South African talent in the field.

Despite the challenges posed by steep cost-of-living increases in South Africa, Kenya, and Nigeria, Africa’s entertainment and media (E&M) industry is poised for robust growth, according to PwC’s Africa Entertainment & Media Outlook 2023 – 2027 report. While the industry faced setbacks due to economic struggles globally, the report indicates a rebound in various segments, surpassing pre-COVID revenue levels.

Alinah Motaung, PwC Africa Entertainment and Media Leader, acknowledges the slowdown caused by sluggish consumer spending but notes an overall revenue rise in 2022. Charles Stuart, PwC South Africa Entertainment and Media Partner, emphasizes South Africa’s stable growth, expecting it to outpace the global average, while Nigeria anticipates the most impressive growth globally, doubling E&M revenue by 2027. Kenya, with revenue growth across all segments, particularly in internet advertising and OTT video, showcases a promising market.

The report highlights the impact of streaming services on traditional TV services, prompting industry leaders to reassess operations and adapt to new entrants. Music streaming, led by platforms like Spotify, is experiencing substantial growth in South Africa. The rise of generative artificial intelligence (gen AI) and the metaverse has also influenced the industry, prompting regulatory responses in South Africa and Nigeria. Mobile remains a key driver of internet access in Africa, with the 5G rollout progressing, offering opportunities for growth in services like music and video streaming, gaming, and the metaverse.

Dubai is set to experience robust growth in cruise ship passengers during the upcoming 2023/24 season, with both Dubai Cruise Terminal and Dubai Harbour Cruise Terminal anticipating double-digit increases. Dubai Cruise Terminal, situated in Port Rashid, is gearing up for an impressive 40% surge in passenger numbers, indicative of a strong recovery from the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.

The two terminals combined are expected to host over 150 cruise calls during the season. This growth is not only attributed to an increase in the size of cruise ships choosing Dubai as their homeport but also to the debut voyage of Virgin Voyages, the world’s newest cruise line brand founded by Sir Richard Branson.

The exclusive regional hub for Carnival Corporation, Dubai Harbour Cruise Terminal is a focal point for major cruise lines, including Cunard, P&O Cruises, Princess Cruises, Royal Caribbean International, Celebrity Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, Silversea, and Cordelia Cruises. This season’s forecast predicts a 28% increase in visitors compared to the previous year, reflecting Dubai’s status as a prominent port of embarkation and a sought-after destination for cruise lines in the Middle East and the Arabian Gulf.
