SABOTAGE: ESKOM UNDER SIEGE with News24 Investigative Journalist Kyle Cowan
After unknown saboteurs toppled a strategic pylon near Lethabo Power Station in the Free State in November 2021, almost causing the country to plunge into stage 5 load-shedding, Eskom’s chief executive officer André de Ruyter declared: ‘This was clearly now an act of sabotage and I think we can call it as such.’ Who was behind this, and what is their ultimate goal?
Since his appointment in January 2020, De Ruyter has faced intense opposition from within the power utility as he attempts to clean up corruption and return the electricity company to a semblance of its former glory. He is not alone. Chief operating officer Jan Oberholzer and other trusted allies in Eskom have also come under intense fire.
From forensic investigations and botched probes to accusations of racism, De Ruyter and Oberholzer have spent significant amounts of time fending off allegation after allegation. Amid this onslaught, it has become clear that their enemies will take any measures necessary to have them removed from office.
Based on exclusive interviews with De Ruyter, Oberholzer and other key figures, SABOTAGE: ESKOM UNDER SIEGE is a story of conspiracy and subterfuge at South Africa’s ailing power utility, uncovering the power struggles that threaten the country’s very survival.

Cape Town DINING NOTES
Ranking on the WORLD’S 50 BEST RESTAURANT LIST year on year, the La Colombe Group have built up their reputation for one of South Africa’s must visit dining experiences and now, their latest offering provides those who’ve never stepped into the world of fine-dining, a taste that could become a dining affair.
Having enjoyed a lunch at the pinnacle of the La Colombe Group of restaurants, at La Colombe in 2021, The Sandton Times headed down to Cape Town to take a seat at the table of two new restaurants in the La Colombe Group, centrally located at the V&A Waterfront, a bit closer to the Mother City’s heart.
PIER diners will get to experience an intimate, multi-course fine-dining experience at one of the world’s most-loved destinations, in a space designed with a soft palette, using the right tones and materials to set the stage for exquisite cuisine, whilst The Waterside, situated away from the hustle and bustle of the Victoria Wharf, offers an un-intimidating step into a world of tranquillity set to iconic views of the V&A Waterfront harbour. Simplicity is at the heart of The Waterside’s décor and design, using natural woods and dynamic furniture pieces, allowing the dishes and service to really shine offering a different, but equally exceptional, dining experience.
To book your seat, visit the PIER website or The Waterside website.
DESIGN QUARTER REPOSITIONING with Darryl Mayers, Joint CEO of Investec Property Fund

New tenants include Bootleggers, Checkers’ new concept store, Checkers’ Liquor and Checkers’ Petshop Science as well as a Samsung store. The first phase of the Design Quarter redevelopment is scheduled for completion around August 2022 with the final project due for completion mid-2023.
SHANKY’S WHIP AND IRISH WHISKEY with Rowan Leibbrandt, Founding Partner of Truman & Orange
In Ireland it’s not uncommon for an Irish Whiskey shot to be dropped into a pint of Guinness (we suspect Irish men are tougher than men elsewhere) and Shanky’s recreates this soft creamy-rich flavour. The resulting spirit is midnight black, with a sweet smoothness underpinned with spicy Irish Whiskey notes.
Shanky’s name deserves a mention too, as his story is almost as curious and delectable as his drink. So the story goes (and Ireland has many of those) that Mr Shanky was an extraordinary jockey but also a bit of a troublemaker (something else Ireland has many of). One of the particular incidents that made his name, was when he was once thrown from his horse and promptly returned on an ostrich to win the race in front of a startled crowd. Well, that’s the way the legend goes, and who are we to doubt it!
Priced at R395, Shanky’s Whip is available at leading liquor stores and online.
