New Beehive Project With Emira Property Fund Chief Operating Officer Ulana Van Biljon
Emira Property Fund, a JSE-listed company, is making waves beyond the stock exchange by championing an important cause: bees. Recognizing the decline in global bee populations and the crucial role bees play in pollinating plants, Emira has installed beehives at several of its properties in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal since 2020.
Bees are vital for pollinating food crops, with a third of global food production relying on their pollination efforts, as highlighted by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation. Unfortunately, bees face numerous threats from human activities, including habitat loss, pesticides, air pollution, and climate change. Emira’s bee conservation project takes a holistic approach to combat environmental degradation and protect these essential workers.
Emira strategically selected sites for beehive installation based on safe locations, surrounding biodiversity, and the availability of flowering plants that provide nectar for honey production. Knightsbridge office park and Hyde Park Lane were among the first properties to host beehives, followed by Wonderpark Shopping Centre, One Highveld industrial premises, Springfield open-air retail centre, Park Boulevard local shopping centre, Albury Park, and Epsom Downs Office Park.
Emira prioritizes safety by carefully considering hive placements away from heavy foot traffic. Signposts clearly indicate the presence of beehives, and beekeeping activities take place at night. The initiative has already yielded impressive results, with the bees producing 85kg of honey across multiple sites. The honey serves as a reminder to Emira staff and service providers of the importance of preserving biodiversity.
Each property’s honey exhibits a distinct flavor profile due to the bees’ collection of nectar within a 3km radius. Johannesburg honey features notes of exotic garden ornamental plants like jasmine, lavender, rosemary, and jacaranda trees, while Pretoria North honey carries hints of indigenous plants, acacias, and grassland flowers. Recipients of the honey have enjoyed the unique and delicious flavors.
Emira’s bee conservation project aligns with its commitment to good environmental, social, and governance practices. The company’s “No Net Future Loss” policy aims to conserve and promote biodiversity across its portfolio, reducing its environmental impact. Healthy ecosystems play a vital role in providing clean air and water, fertile soil, and food, and Emira recognizes their importance for the well-being of communities and the economy.
As the company continues to prioritize environmental stewardship, it sets an example for other real estate investment trusts and highlights the positive impact that businesses can make in safeguarding our planet’s natural resources.
