In a miraculous turn of events, The Sandton Times recently found itself behind the wheel of a Volkswagen Golf. Not just any Golf, mind you – the eighth generation, a model that has long been an icon of South African roads. Our last VW Golf drive? A full 25 years ago, when the Golf 4 made its local debut. Needless to say, much has changed.
The Volkswagen Golf has a storied history here, stretching back to its 1978 introduction. The Mk1 immediately won praise for reliability and practicality, quickly becoming a staple on city streets and country lanes alike. Locally assembled at Volkswagen’s Kariega plant, the Golf was affordable, approachable, and instantly popular. Successive generations cemented its reputation: the Mk2 in 1984 upped build quality, the Mk3 in 1993 impressed with refinement, and the Mk4 in 1999 became a top-selling favourite.

With the fifth and sixth generations, technology and safety leapt forward, while the seventh, introduced in 2013, brought even more polish and sophistication. The enduring appeal of the Golf lies in a rare blend: design, performance, and German quality that feels just right.
Fast forward to 2025, and the Golf 8 is here, carrying that legacy into a motoring landscape increasingly crowded with aggressive, value-packed Chinese offerings. VW has responded thoughtfully, updating the Golf with a fresh design, modern tech, and the reintroduction of the popular 1.4 TSI engine – an efficient 110kW petrol unit that delivers both spirited performance and commendable fuel economy.

Visually, the new Golf is unmistakable. The front end has been revamped with sharper lines, and for the first time, the Volkswagen logo is illuminated – a subtle yet classy touch that immediately draws the eye, although the branded VW projector puddle lights are a bit unrestrained. It’s no wonder passersby whipped out their phones for a quick snapshot whenever we parked. The headlights have also undergone a dramatic makeover. LED technology now takes center stage, with the top-of-the-range IQ.LIGHT LED matrix system boasting a high-performance main beam that can reach up to 500 metres. Driving through Cape Town at dusk, these lights proved not just stylish but genuinely useful, cutting through the night with impressive clarity.
Volkswagen has made sure the Golf 8 caters to a broad range of drivers with its new equipment lines: Life, Life Plus, R-Line, and R-Line Plus. The Life model combines essential style with technology, featuring Eco LED headlights, Wireless App Connect, Cruise Control, a 10.3-inch Infotainment Radio, a 6-speaker audio system, 10-colour ambient lighting, and a 10-inch digital cockpit. The 16-inch Norfolk alloy wheels finish off the look nicely. For those seeking more luxury, the Life Plus adds rear-view camera, 30-colour ambient lighting, Driver Profile Selection, and sports comfort seats, striking a balance between tech and indulgence.

Stepping into the R-Line and R-Line Plus models, the Golf becomes even more enticing. R-Line trims add sporty styling with integrated headrests, body-covered bumpers, Park Assist, Progressive steering, Climatronic 3-zone climate control, and an overall sense of German precision. The R-Line Plus takes things further with IQ Matrix LED headlights, illuminated VW logo, heated and ventilated front seats, Vienna leather interiors, brushed stainless-steel pedals, and 18-inch alloy wheels. Essentially, the R-Line Plus is as close to driving a small luxury car as you can get in a Golf.
Under the bonnet, the 1.4 TSI engine is mated to an 8-speed Tiptronic transmission. Torque peaks at 250 Nm between 1’500 – 4’000 rpm, and acceleration from 0–100 km/h takes just 8.5 seconds – a figure that feels peppy on Cape Town’s winding coastal roads. Despite this performance, fuel efficiency remains commendable at 6.3 litres per 100 km, making it an economical companion for both city commuting and weekend escapes.

Volkswagen hasn’t skimped on peace of mind, either. The Golf 8 comes with a 3-year/120’000 km warranty, a 5-year/90’000 km service plan, and a 12-year anti-corrosion warranty, with 15’000 km service intervals. Prices for the new 1.4 TSI variants start at R580’900 for the Life model, topping out at R688’100 for the R-Line Plus.
Driving the Golf 8 along the scenic routes of Cape Town, from Sea Point to Camps Bay, it was impossible not to notice the refinement. The layout, look, and feel of the cabin remain quintessentially Volkswagen – intuitive, ergonomic, and solidly built. The infotainment system is straightforward, responsive, and integrates seamlessly with steering wheel controls which are actual buttons. The ride is composed yet engaging, with the R-Line models offering the kind of feedback that makes twisty mountain roads a joy rather than a chore.
In a world where compact hatchbacks increasingly feel generic, the Volkswagen Golf 8 reminds you why this car has endured. It continues to offer a good mix of style, performance, and technology, wrapped in the kind of build quality only the Germans seem to perfect. The return of the 1.4 TSI engine is particularly welcome, bringing efficiency and zest in equal measure.

On South African roads, the Golf remains an icon. It’s practical enough for daily commutes, refined enough to impress on weekends away, and stylish enough to turn heads at every stoplight. Volkswagen has once again proven that, while the motoring world moves fast, a well-crafted, thoughtful hatchback can still hold its own. For anyone in the market for a compact car that checks all the right boxes, the Golf 8 deserves a serious look.
