BAIC South Africa officially launched its all-new B30 SUV during a full-day event in Sandton, giving motoring media the chance to experience the brand’s latest model in a variety of real-world conditions. From city streets to rough terrain, the B30 was put through its paces before being unveiled to dealers and early-bird owners at a gala dinner that concluded the day.

Starting at R519’000, the B30 range positions itself as one of the most compelling offers in South Africa’s mid-size SUV segment. Its promise is simple yet bold – to deliver high-end design, intelligent technology, and premium comfort without the usual price tag.

Premium Features, Accessible Price

Even the entry-level B30 Elite Adventure comes packed with features that rival more expensive competitors. Standard equipment includes LED lighting, digital instrumentation, dual-zone climate control, 18-inch alloy wheels, and BAIC’s advanced driver-assist suite – the kind of specifications typically reserved for upper-tier trims in other brands.

Inside, the cabin is modern and thoughtfully designed. A 14.6-inch touchscreen infotainment system dominates the dashboard, accompanied by a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster that adapts to driving modes and lighting conditions. Connectivity is a strong point, with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, wireless charging, Bluetooth, and voice recognition all included across the range.

Comfort is equally prioritised. Heated and ventilated leather seats, a panoramic sunroof, multi-colour ambient lighting, and a memory driver seat with Welcome Mode make the B30 feel decidedly upmarket.

We’ve built a car that delivers what people want, not just what they can afford. The B30 gives customers advanced safety, design, and comfort – without compromise. It’s a smarter choice for a new generation of SUV buyers.

Next-Generation Safety And Assistance

The B30 debuts BAIC’s Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) – a comprehensive safety suite that includes:
• Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC)
• Lane-Keeping Assist (LKA)
• Blind-Spot Detection (BSD)
• Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) with pedestrian detection
• 360° panoramic camera system

This technology reinforces BAIC’s vision of making advanced safety features standard, not optional.

A South African Milestone

During the launch, Yang Yixin, CEO of BAIC South Africa, underscored the brand’s growing local footprint and long-term commitment to the market.

The B30 has already officially rolled off our South African production line. This is not just a slogan – it’s a reflection of our commitment to local manufacturing, job creation, and investment.

Yang added that the B30, along with the successful X55, represents “the twin stars” of BAIC’s Beijing brand in South Africa – a brand rooted in 60 years of off-road DNA and engineering innovation. He emphasised that BAIC’s dual focus on passenger and commercial vehicles underpins a sustainable growth strategy for the region, balancing urban mobility with industrial development.

Engineered For Real-World Conditions

Under the skin, the B30 reflects BAIC’s legacy of off-road endurance and technical innovation. With over 4-million kilometres of global testing and decades of engineering expertise, this is an SUV built to handle extremes – from the icy roads of northern China to the scorching deserts of the Middle East.

The B30 was tested in some of the world’s toughest conditions but built for the realities of South Africa. It’s an SUV that feels equally at home in Sandton or Sutherland.

For adventure seekers, the Premium Adventure HEV AWD variant offers formidable performance: 301 kW and 685 Nm from a hybrid system combining petrol and electric power. The All-Terrain System (ATS) lets drivers toggle between Mud, Sand, Wading, and Snow modes, while the real-time AWD system reacts in just 0.03 seconds for instant traction. With 215 mm of ground clearance, a 25° approach angle, and a 30° departure angle, the B30 confidently blends urban sophistication with true off-road ability.

Power And Efficiency In Harmony

The B30 Elite and Premium Adventure petrol models use a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine producing 138 kW and 305 Nm, mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. These versions deliver smooth power for everyday use, though weight means acceleration feels measured rather than aggressive.

The hybrid variants, however, employ BAIC’s Magic Core Hybrid System — a self-charging electric setup that seamlessly switches between petrol and electric power. It offers six intelligent driving modes that balance efficiency and performance, achieving claimed fuel consumption figure as low as 5.85 L/100 km and a range of up to 1000 km on a single tank.

This balance of power and economy places the B30 among the most efficient mid-size SUVs in its class, ideal for long commutes or cross-country travel.

Local Production And Long-Term Support

BAIC’s commitment extends beyond product design to aftersales assurance. All B30 models are backed by a 7-year / 200’000 km general warranty, an 8-year / 150’000 km high-voltage components warranty, and a 7-year / 90’000 km service plan – a comprehensive package designed to build long-term trust with South African consumers.

The brand’s local assembly at its Coega (Gqeberha) plant marks another step in solidifying BAIC’s investment in South Africa. Yang noted that the company’s partnership with local suppliers would continue to grow, bringing more jobs, more opportunities, and greater competitiveness to the market.

Model Range And Pricing

The B30 line-up offers four distinct models:

Model Powertrain Transmission Drive Type Price (Incl. VAT)
B30 Elite Adventure 1.5T Petrol 7DCT FWD R519,000
B30 Premium Adventure 1.5T Petrol 7DCT FWD R549,900
B30 Elite Adventure HEV 1.5T Hybrid DHT FWD R639,900
B30 Premium Adventure HEV AWD 1.5T Hybrid DHT AWD R689,900

These prices make the B30 one of the most attractively priced SUVs with hybrid technology currently available in South Africa, especially given its comprehensive list of luxury and safety features.

A Confident Step Forward

BAIC’s growing reputation in South Africa is backed by the success of models like the X55, which previously earned TopGear’s Reader’s Choice Recommendation and Car of the Year recognition. The introduction of the B30 builds on that momentum, solidifying BAIC’s ambition to become a key player in the mid-size SUV category.

While some reviewers note that the petrol version feels slightly restrained under hard acceleration – possibly due to its size and weight – overall impressions were positive. The B30 impressed with its refined design, strong presence, and balance of luxury and practicality, showing that Chinese engineering has evolved into a global competitor.
