Johannesburg’s jacaranda season arrived in full splendour, as it does each year, but the Four Seasons Hotel The Westcliff elevated the purple haze to extraordinary new heights with its limited-run Jacaranda Afternoon Tea, which even included an exclusive helicopter flight over the city’s famous canopy, for those looking for an extra purple thrill.

On a rainy Johannesburg afternoon, The Sandton Times visited the Four Seasons Hotel The Westcliff to explore the Jacaranda Afternoon Tea as well as the hotel’s newly unveiled lobby – a light-filled architectural centrepiece that marks the completion of the hotel’s most ambitious refurbishment to date. The redesign brings fresh energy, completing a two-year transformation that has reshaped the guest experience and cemented the hotel’s place as one of Johannesburg’s definitive luxury destinations.

The new Destination Lobby makes an immediate impression. Towering windows frame sweeping views over Forest Town, Saxonwold, and Rosebank, while the expansive volume of the room creates a setting that is both welcoming and quietly theatrical. The Lobby Lounge forms part of this reimagined space, shifting seamlessly between a patisserie and casual dining venue during the day and an elegant cocktail lounge by night. Its generous veranda is designed for all seasons, moving effortlessly from morning meetings to evening drinks under the city lights.

The architectural language draws inspiration from Johannesburg’s mining heritage, with metallic accents, natural stone, and textured finishes that speak to the city’s past while embracing contemporary sophistication.

Beyond its aesthetic statement, the redesigned lobby enhances the hotel’s operational flow. Guests now arrive to an expanded check-in area and direct access to a 100-bay parking facility beneath the lobby, improving convenience for both visitors and event guests. The space also connects easily to Flames restaurant and the Four Seasons Spa, while the recently completed Grand Ballroom – now one of Johannesburg’s largest event venues – has been given its own private entrance, tailored for the city’s most exclusive gatherings. This final phase of redevelopment, executed in partnership with ASB Hospitality and Hotel Properties Limited, represents a significant investment of $25-million.

But we digress. At the heart of this story is the Jacaranda Afternoon Tea, crafted with finesse and seasonal inspiration by Executive Pastry Chef Nathan Jacobs. His menu paid homage to the colours and quiet poetry of the Jacaranda bloom, weaving classic afternoon tea traditions with contemporary artistry. The offering celebrated both flavour and form, from light, warm scones to patisserie items that echo the soft gradients of lilac and violet spread across the city.

Each bite is a story in miniature. The hazelnut and blackberry financier balanced nutty warmth with berry tartness, while the Black Forest opera presented a refined interpretation of a nostalgic favourite. The citrus and blueberry tart brought brightness and crisp precision, and the cassis and white chocolate vacherin evoked the Jacaranda bloom with its glossy meringue and delicate purple tones. Savoury elements mirrored the same level of attention: cucumber and herbed crème fraîche on brown bread was refreshing and neat; smoked salmon and guacamole on brioche offered rich contrast; and the beef short rib amagwinya provided a distinctly South African note, lush and comforting. Even the mushroom empanada introduced a quiet earthiness, grounding the lightness of the rest of the menu.

Tea service was equally considered. We were encouraged to explore an array of aromatic blends, including Four Seasons Exclusive Black Tea, Sakura Butterfly Green, Marula Strawberry Rooibos, and Zesty Chai Honeybush Rooibos. While the hotel recommended enjoying these teas without added sweetness, a discreet spoonful of honey proved irresistible and, dare one say, elevated the flavour experience. The result was a tea service that balanced ceremony with relaxed indulgence.

Even on a rain-streaked afternoon, the views felt dreamy and cinematic, with the city shifting from misty grey to soft purples as the storm clears. The experience was not just about tea; it was about witnessing Johannesburg in one of its most romantic moods.

The Jacaranda Afternoon Tea had a limited run, echoing the fleeting charm of the bloom itself. As quickly as the purple flowers appeared, they fell, carpeting the streets in soft violet confetti before disappearing for another year. The tea, like the season, was a moment to pause and savour a time that will not return until the next spring. And if the success of this years’ experience is any indication, the Four Seasons Hotel The Westcliff might well be tempted to bring it back in 2026.

For now, Johannesburg can enjoy a rare combination: a city in bloom, a hotel at the height of its elegance, and memories of a tea experience that captures the beauty of both.
