Pasta Making Classes

Date Night Bucket List: Pasta Making Class at Old Town Italy

Who doesn’t love a bowl of pasta – especially in winter – even more so when it’s freshly made. That’s exactly what the pasta making class at Old Town Italy is all about!

  • From authentic Italian dishes to hand-stretched Neapolitan pizza with real mozzarella, Old Town Italy brings the taste of Italy a little closer to home.
  • Old Town Italy also boasts a market place with grass-fed meat, a cheese counter and freshly baked, artisanal bread.
  • If you’re lucky, the Old Town Italy you visit has its very own Fabbri 1905 gelato bar.
  • Visit www.sandtontimes.co.za for more stories.

Get ready to put on those aprons, get those hands dirty, sip some vino and make your own pasta from scratch as Old Town Italy in Melrose Arch takes you through the process. With ingredients portioned and ready to go, let the Old Town Italy kitchen crew take you through the steps of making your own pasta dough, which will be served up a bit later with your choice of pasta sauce. Here are some of the highlights:

Once all the basic ingredients are mixed by hand, kneaded and left to rest for a bit, it is then portioned and fed through a pasta maker.

Rolling The Pasta

The first signs of success. After a little bit of watching and learning, the rolling of the pasta is underway. The real skill is to get the pasta consistent and thin.

A selection of anti-pasta makes sure that the craving and anticipation of your homemade pasta doesn’t get completely out of hand.

And there it is! A bowl of pasta, made by you, with a little help and sauce from the Old Town Italy team. If there is any tip that can be given, make sure your pasta dough is super thin to get the ultimate mouth feel.

It’s not the most difficult cooking you’ll ever do, as the ingredients and process are quite straight forward. What does however takes some mastery is getting that pasta dough just right and then getting the pasta dough thin enough and shaped consistently. It’s no easy task but the night is long, the wine bottle is full and the company is great – hopefully. The manual process of producing the perfect noodle each and every time provides a whole new level of appreciation for those who do choose to make pasta fresh.

Don’t miss the next class at Old Town Italy is a Pizza Making Class on July 28, where you’ll get the chance to make Ravioli stuffed with Ricotta & Mushroom. At R355 per person, including all the ingredients and tools needed to make your pasta dish, the evening also includes a light antipasto starter.
