The Sandton Times headed to Steyn City to join Samsung South Africa and select tech-media for a Samsung Galaxy Unpacked 2024 viewing party, streamed live from Paris. Whilst some might have been left wanting after the announcement, many would have been excited about some of the new product releases, and the integration of AI into most of the Samsung line-up. Kenny Rogers would have summed it up as: “You’ve got to know when to hold ’em, know when to fold ’em, know when to walk away and know when to run [with it]”.

Continuing with the fold-flip-fad, Samsung introduced the Galaxy Z Fold6 and Galaxy Z Flip6, leveraging Samsung’s Galaxy AI to assist with productivity and creativity. The Galaxy Z Fold6 features a large screen that looks to enhance productivity, while the Galaxy Z Flip6 offers a compact, customizable experience with its FlexWindow display, still running off the Android OS.

The Galaxy Z Fold6 and Z Flip6 come equipped with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 Mobile Platform, delivering performance optimized for AI processing. This platform enhances graphics and overall performance, positioning the devices for demanding tasks. Both devices also feature improved cooling systems to maintain performance during intensive use.

The Galaxy Z Fold6 offers a range of AI-powered features designed to enhance productivity. Samsung Notes’ Note Assist provides translation, summaries, and auto formatting for easy note-taking, while the new transcript feature allows for transcription, translation, and summarising of voice recordings. The device also includes a Composer feature in the Samsung Keyboard, which generates suggested text for emails and social media posts based on previous content.

Additionally, the S Pen experience is expanded with Galaxy AI, allowing users to create art pieces with the new Sketch to Image feature. The Galaxy Z Fold6’s collaboration with Google Gemini offers an AI-powered assistant for tasks like organizing travel itineraries and accessing detailed information while watching videos.

The Galaxy Z Flip6 focuses on portability and creativity, featuring an enhanced 3.4-inch Super AMOLED FlexWindow that supports AI-assisted functions. Users can reply to texts, check health updates, and control music without opening the device. The FlexWindow also offers more widgets and customization options, including AI-powered Photo Ambient, which changes wallpapers based on time and weather .i.e. if it’s raining outside, it’ll also rain on your mobile device – digitally.

The Galaxy Z Flip6’s FlexCam provides versatile camera options, with new Auto Zoom functionality to automatically adjust framing. The device’s 50MP wide and 12MP ultra-wide sensors ensure clear, crisp photos, while Nightography and video HDR enhance low-light video recording. The device also boasts improved battery life, enabling longer usage times.

Both the Galaxy Z Fold6 and Z Flip6 feature a sleek, symmetrical design with enhanced durability. The dual rail hinge structure and strengthened folding edge distribute external impacts more effectively, while enhanced layers on the main screen reduce the appearance of creases. The devices also include Armor Aluminum and Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 3, making them the most durable Galaxy Z series phones to date.

Samsung also introduced the Galaxy Buds3 and Galaxy Buds3 Pro, which utilize Galaxy AI to enhance sound quality and communication. The Buds3 series features Adaptive EQ and Adaptive ANC, which optimize sound and noise cancellation in real-time.

The Galaxy Buds3 Pro offers premium audio with 2-way speakers and Dual Amplifiers for precise sound. The Ultra High Quality Audio supports high-resolution audio, while the Super-Wideband Call feature ensures clear voice calls. The Galaxy Buds3 series is also designed with sustainability in mind, using recycled materials and eco-friendly packaging.

Samsung also highlighted the expansion of its wearables portfolio with the Galaxy Ring, Galaxy Watch7, and Galaxy Watch Ultra, designed to enhance digital health through AI-powered insights.

With a familiar naming convention, the Galaxy Watch Ultra is considered to be the most capable smartwatch in Samsung’s line-up, including features like a Dynamic Lug System for comfort, a 3’000-nit display for readability in bright sunlight, and extensive durability for extreme environments.

The one accessory we were really excited to trial was Samsung’s Galaxy Ring, which won’t be coming to South Africa all too soon. Whilst not a new concept, with other similar rings on the market, its integration with the Samsung App and device universe is what sets it apart. The Galaxy Ring provides continuous health monitoring with features like sleep analysis and heart rate alerts, while the Galaxy Watch7 offers over 100 workout tracking options and advanced health metrics.

But what about data security and privacy? Samsung’s latest devices are secured by Samsung Knox, providing defence-grade security with features like Enhanced Data Protection and end-to-end encryption. Users also have full control over their data and AI experiences through Galaxy AI settings.

The Galaxy Z Fold6, Z Flip6, and Galaxy Buds3 series will be available from July 2024. The Galaxy Watch7 and Galaxy Watch Ultra will also be available, whilst the Galaxy Ring will not be available in South Africa – for now. Samsung in South Africa also announced a range of promotions and deals to entice potential buyers.

Whilst it is yet to be decided how much or how little AI integration will be sensible when it comes to personal technology in general, Samsung has joined other tech giants in making AI a key driver for their new releases. The South Korean multinational continues to push the boundaries of mobile technology, now integrating AI to enhance user experiences and drive the future of mobile communication, productivity, and creativity.
