MG Revs Back Into South Africa With Launch In Sandton

Sandton, the heartbeat of South Africa’s economy, played host to an exciting chapter in motoring history this week as MG made a triumphant return to the country.

  • Founded over 100 years ago by British motoring pioneer William Morris and his visionary General Manager Cecil Kimber, MG has always been synonymous with creating accessible sports cars.
  • The brand’s first model, the 14/28 Super Sports, redefined the motoring landscape with its sporty aesthetics and dynamic performance.
  • Fast forward to 2025, MG stands stronger than ever, having evolved under the stewardship of SAIC Motor, the Chinese automotive giant that acquired the brand in 2007.

The iconic brand, steeped in over a century of innovation and charm, celebrated its re-entry with an unforgettable launch event attended by media, stakeholders, and distributors.

SAIC’s influence has not only revitalised MG’s R&D capabilities but also ensured its global footprint continues to grow. In 2023, MG Motor sold approximately 840’000 vehicles globally, with 88% of sales coming from outside China. In the UK, MG has been the fastest-growing automotive brand for two consecutive years.

The return of MG to South Africa is marked by a clear, well-thought-out strategy. According to Sky Zhang, General Manager of MG Motor South Africa, the brand is entering the local market with a strong foundation.

We are confident MG will perform just as well in the local market. That’s why we are launching initially with 25 dealerships and have plans for more in the next two years. MG’s arrival here is a strategic, long-term investment backed by SAIC Motor’s extensive infrastructure, resources, and commitment to quality.

At the heart of MG’s strategy is a focus on localisation. The company has prioritised building a robust parts supply chain, already establishing a National Parts Distribution Centre in Isando, Kempton Park. This ensures high-quality parts are readily available, minimising downtime for customers and providing some peace of mind.

MG’s re-launch in South Africa introduces three models, each tailored to appeal to different segments of the market:

  1. MG ZS: The Compact SUV

The MG ZS combines practicality with affordability. Featuring a bold mesh grille, feline-inspired headlights, and wedge-shaped taillights, the ZS is a charming release. It comes in two variants, Comfort and Luxury, powered by a 1.5-litre petrol engine producing 84kW and 150Nm. With a top speed of 195km/h and a fuel consumption of just 7.1 l/100km, the ZS is both economical and promises an enjoyable drive.

Inside, the ZS boasts an 8-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and class-leading safety features, including six airbags, Electronic Stability Control (ESC), and Hill Launch Assist (HLA). The vehicle is backed by a 7-year warranty and a 5-year service plan.

  1. MG HS: Luxury Meets Value

The MG HS, revealed at the 2024 Goodwood Festival of Speed, takes the SUV experience to a premium level without the premium price. Available with 1.5-litre and 2.0-litre turbocharged engines, the HS offers an exhilarating drive complemented by cutting-edge safety technology, including Emergency Lane Keep Assist, Blind Spot Detection, and a 360-degree HD camera.

The interior is where the HS truly shines. Features include a 12.3-inch digital display, virtual cockpit, panoramic sunroof, and adaptive cruise control. Comfort options like dual-zone climate control and perforated leatherette upholstery ensure a luxurious experience.

  1. MG Cyberster: A Nod to Heritage

The MG Cyberster is the crown jewel of MG’s new line-up – a fully electric roadster designed to celebrate the brand’s sports car heritage. Its sleek design and advanced technology make it a fitting tribute to MG’s legacy, while its electric drivetrain propels the brand into the future.

The Cyberster more than lives up to MG’s sporting heritage. It’s a thoroughly forward-thinking take on the traditional roadster.

MG’s future in South Africa promises more than just these three models. Hatchbacks, hybrids, and electric vehicles are already in the pipeline, ensuring local consumers have access to the latest automotive innovations.

One of MG’s most impressive achievements under SAIC’s leadership is its global design and engineering network. While manufacturing predominantly takes place in China, SAIC has invested heavily in the UK, including establishing the SAIC Design Advanced London studio. This facility focuses on futuristic design concepts, blending MG’s British heritage with cutting-edge technology.

Carl Gotham, Advanced Design Director at SAIC Design London, reflected on the responsibility and excitement of designing for such an iconic brand.

The MG badge carries a huge connection and magic. It’s a great responsibility but also a fantastic opportunity. To create products that connect with people and say something meaningful is incredibly rewarding.

Carl emphasised the importance of simplicity and clarity in timeless car design, while also exploring sustainable materials and eco-friendly technologies. These elements ensure MG’s designs are not only visually appealing but also aligned with global environmental moves.
