Since its initial launch in February 2021, Fiat has been hard at work, updating and enhancing the 500x range, culminating in the introduction of the Fiat 500x Sport Extended Soft Top (EST). This limited-time model offers some great open-air motoring while delivering good grip, optimal handling, improved safety, and maximum fun. The Sandton Times took the Fiat 500x Sport EST for a winter drive through greater Cape Town and enjoyed every kilometre of it!

With just the touch of a button, the electrically operated folding system folds away into a panoramic view of the sky above in a mere 15 seconds, opening up virtually the entire roof area of the 500x Sport. This 775mm x 730mm opening can be activated at speeds of up to 100km/h and boasts a convenient one-touch opening, with a two-step closing mechanism for added versatility.

But that’s not all. The 500x Sport models are easily distinguished from the 500x Cross with their eye-catching design cues. Body-colored wheel arch mouldings, side skirts, and 19-inch wheels give the Sport model a dynamic and commanding presence, accentuated by Sport badging and dual chrome exhaust tips. Inside, the 500x Sport boasts a techno leather and Alcantara steering wheel, titanium-styled dashboard finish, and a 3.5″ TFT color cluster. Completing the Sport theme is the Alcantara-finished binnacle cover.

Perfect for Cape Town, offering both outdoor and urban escapades, the Fiat 500x Cross ticks all the boxes. Equipped with roof rails, skid plates, black mirror caps, and sitting on 18-inch wheels, this bold character is ready to take on any season a Cape Town day has lined-up. Full LED headlamps and LED fog lights illuminate the road, while a soft-touch steering wheel, courtesy light on the sun visor, and automatic dual-zone air conditioning ensure that every drive feels good.

Powering these adrenaline-pumping adventures is Fiat’s 1.4-liter direct injection petrol engine, paired with a fully automatic six-speed DDCT transmission. With 103kW of power at 5’000 rpm and 230Nm of torque at 1’750 rpm, the Fiat 500x effortlessly dominates the road with that Italian style and finesse. Plus, it’s fuel-efficient, boasting a combined cycle consumption of just 5.7 l/100km.

When it comes to technology, the Fiat 500x has a bit to offer. Lane Assist keeps the car on the right track, warning the driver if the vehicle starts to veer off course and even correcting the steering to bring the ride back into the lane. The innovative electric parking brake ensures the vehicle’s safety no matter where it’s parked and the size of the Fiat 500x ensures parking space even on the busiest city roads.

The state-of-the-art infotainment system takes connectivity to new heights with a Uconnect 7″ HD touchscreen featuring navigation, a hands-free system, Bluetooth technology, and voice recognition. With Apple CarPlay integration and Android Auto compatibility, its simple to bring your favourite maps, music, contacts, and more along for the ride. However, the screen could be a touch bigger with a faster response time, to round-off the rest of the cars ease of use.

Safety is a top priority in the Fiat 500x, with six airbags a standard feature. Front airbags for the driver and passenger, along with curtain airbags and side bags, provide comprehensive crash protection. The daytime running lights, inspired by the iconic 500 logo, not only enhance visibility but also add a touch of coolness to the overall package.

ABS and Electronic Stability Control come standard across the range, ensuring optimal control and stability in any driving condition. And for those uphill struggles, the hill-holder feature makes the pull-off smooth even in demanding traffic.
