Chess Masters To Compete In Epic Sandton Challenge November 12

Chess enthusiasts are getting ready for November 12 to witness some of South Africa’s top young Chess Masters compete against a Grand Master in an action-packed match at The Leonardo in Sandton.

 

  • The 27-year-old Grand Master from Delhi, India, Sahaj Grover has been residing in South Africa since 2017.
  • Three unique events make up the day of Chess Challenges.
  • As competitors take on one of the best in the world at one of the tallest venues in the world, players will quite literally be on a high.

The competition, which is slated for Saturday, November 12, will be divided into a number of tasks throughout the day and will feature Grand Master Sahaj Grover in a grand play-off match at Alto234, Africa’s highest urban bar located on the rooftop of The Leonardo.

 

The Grand Master’s achievements after winning the 2005 Under-10 World Youth Chess Championship include earning a FIDE rating of 2504 and co-authoring a course on endgame strategy.

 

South Africa’s brightest brains will gather for an amazing chess tournament while also encouraging the general public to come see their prowess in action.

To catch the Chess Masters in action, take note of these details:

 

The Club Challenge
12 November 2022, 8am – 4pm

 

Venue: Level 1 of The Leonardo
Cost: Free of Charge

 

In order to compete against one another and earn a chance to play the Grand Master in the Simultaneous Game Challenge later that day, local chess clubs will send teams of their champions.

 

Visitors are welcome to walk the area and witness the many matches that are taking place while the Club Challenge tournament continues throughout the day.

 

Challenge A Champion
12 November 2022, 8am – 4pm

 

Venue: Leo’s Lounge, Level 3 of The Leonardo
Cost: Free of Charge

 

Between matches, there will be an opportunity for viewers who feel competent to pull up a chair and challenge a champion. This will be a fantastic chance to pick up some new chess techniques from some of the finest players in the world.

 

The Simultaneous Game Challenge
12 November 2022, 4pm

 

Venue: Alto234, The Leonardo
Tickets: R330 per person and can be booked on www.alto234.co.za. Includes entrance and a glass of Moët & Chandon or a non-alcoholic beverage.
The grand finale will be a chess exhibition game at Alto234, where chess enthusiasts can compete against the Grand Master.

 

The goal of this challenge is to provide prospective chess players with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to compete against a Grand Master who will be playing them all simultaneously. The Grandmaster (GM) will move from board to board while really participating in 15 games at once.
