Zapiro’s ‘Have I Got GNUs For You’ With Jonathan Shapiro
Zapiro, born Jonathan Shapiro in 1958, returns with his 29th annual collection, Have I Got GNUs For You. South Africa’s best-known cartoonist once again wields his sharp pen and biting humour to tackle the absurdities of a tumultuous year, cementing his place as a cultural icon.
Zapiro’s journey to becoming a satirical powerhouse began in Cape Town, where he attended school before studying architecture at UCT. His path took dramatic turns through conscription, political activism, detention, and a Fulbright Scholarship to New York. He has drawn for some of South Africa’s leading publications, including the Daily Maverick (his current home), Mail & Guardian, Sowetan, Sunday Times, and Independent Newspapers. In the 1980s, he contributed to the United Democratic Front (UDF) and South. Over the years, his work has earned him numerous awards, including two honorary doctorates.
Have I Got GNUs For You captures the essence of South Africa’s political rollercoaster. This year, Zapiro trains his eagle eye on an election swamped with political parties, Jacob Zuma’s antics, and the chaos of GNU Dawn. His satirical brilliance shines in depictions of Gayton McKenzie’s appointment as Arts Minister and John Hlophe’s controversial role on the JSC. Internationally, Zapiro skewers major stories like Gaza, Ukraine, and the enduring drama of Donald Trump.
Adding to his headline-making year, Zapiro faced controversy when the Film and Publications Board attempted to impose a 16-age restriction on The Showerhead, a documentary about his life.
A gift for every South African with a sense of humour, Have I Got GNUs For You is available online for R220.
Getting Your Mindset Right For Business Success With Entrepreneur & Business Coach Larry Hodes
Larry Hodes is no stranger to the entrepreneurial grind or the leadership challenges that come with building businesses. With over 30 years of experience, Larry has worn many hats: corporate leader, business owner, and now a highly sought-after business coach with his coaching program, Grow. His mission? To empower leaders and teams to unlock their full potential and build impactful, enduring businesses.
Larry’s journey is grounded in real-world experience. He’s successfully built ventures such as the Gourmet Grocer, Arbor Café, and Coffefe Roastery, all beloved staples in greater Sandton. But he’s equally candid about his stumbles, recounting how some ventures didn’t pan out as planned.
Central to Larry’s philosophy is the idea that success stems primarily from mindset. In his popular talk, The Mindset of the Successful Entrepreneur, Larry emphasizes that while tools, systems, and processes play a role, they only account for about 20% of success. The remaining 80% is mindset. Two people can have the same resources, but it’s their mindset that sets them apart.
Larry points to the reticular activating system (RAS) in our brains, which filters our experiences to align with our thoughts. If you feed your mind negativity, like blaming the economy or circumstances, your RAS will reinforce that negativity. But if you focus on opportunities, your RAS becomes a heat-seeking missile for success. Drawing on his experience, Larry has developed strategies to help entrepreneurs shift their focus to what they can control. Instead of fixating on corruption or politics, focus on becoming a better leader, building a stronger team, or improving your sales skills.
Larry’s expertise might just be the catalyst you need to take your business or career to the next level.
