Award-winning journalist, inner-city activist, and municipal civil servant Nickolaus Bauer takes a deep dive into how Africa’s economic hub has reached the brink of collapse and what it will take to rescue Joburg.

From zama zamas running riot to water cuts, blackouts, exploding streets, and political instability, the challenges facing Johannesburg seem insurmountable. Nickolaus examines the crisis by starting at the beginning, with Johannesburg’s origins as a cauldron of cultures and a hustler’s haven. He explores how a city of migrants turned into a xenophobic hotspot and how the politics of gold, the shadow of apartheid, and the evolution of the tsotsi—crime and criminality—affect life in Johannesburg today.

With chapters on redlining, the walkability of the city, corporate corruption, mayoral musical chairs, and the proliferation of illegal backyard buildings, Nickolaus leaves no stone unturned.

As an inner-city activist and former City of Johannesburg Deputy Director, Nickolaus offers incisive insights into everything from Rea Vaya to Ponte City to how the crisis at Eskom affects service delivery. Ultimately, he provides hope about how to rescue Africa’s economic powerhouse.

“Great Johannesburg” is a must-read for local and international readers interested in tracking the collapse and possible resurrection of one of Africa’s greatest cities.
