Kanonkop Wine Estate 50th Anniversary With CEO Johann Kriege

Nestled in the heart of Stellenbosch, the premium red wine region of South Africa’s Western Cape Province, Kanonkop Wine Estate stands as a testament to the country’s wine-making excellence.

The name “Kanonkop” finds its origin in a hillock (kop) on the Simonsberg mountain, overlooking the estate. During bygone centuries, a cannon (kanon) perched on this hill was fired to signal the arrival of sailing ships in Table Bay. This thunderous announcement prompted local farmers to embark on a 50-kilometer journey to the harbor, laden with fresh produce to barter.

In 1973, the first wines bearing the Kanonkop label were produced, marking the estate’s entry into the annals of South African wine greatness. The estate’s wine-making history, though relatively young compared to the ancient châteaux and domaines of Bordeaux and Burgundy, gained momentum under the guidance of Paul Sauer, a pivotal figure whose legacy shaped Kanonkop.

As Kanonkop toasts to its 50th vintage, the estate remains at the forefront of South Africa’s premium wine offerings. The commitment to red grape varieties, traditional cellar practices, and a deep connection to the terroir ensure that each bottle embodies 50 years of excellence—a tradition set to endure in the country’s wine heritage.
