As the property business line in the Insurance and Asset Management (IAM) division of the Standard Bank Group, L2D has committed to building more than malls – it’s hoping to create ‘multidimensional experiences that blend commerce with community, and fashion with function’ – or so a press announcement goes.
At the heart of this initiative lies L2D’s Interactive Spaces strategy – a cornerstone of what the group calls a ‘future-forward approach’ to retail. This strategy reflects a growing demand for environments that go beyond shopping, enabling people to gather, play, relax, and linger longer. The redevelopment of Sandton City’s rooftop is an attempt to leverage this trend.
The development of the Sandton City rooftop holds a pivotal opportunity in the mall’s evolution. We are not only introducing new lifestyle elements but re-imagining how customers engage with our retail spaces, ensuring our malls are relevant and responsive to future-facing consumer behaviours. Through this opportunity, we aim to create multifaceted hubs that support societal needs.

A taste of what’s to come can already be experienced with the launch of Net Set Padel, a padel tennis facility situated at Entrance 8. Officially opened in March 2025, the venue features four indoor and four outdoor padel courts built to international standards, all set against a backdrop of 360-degree views across the Sandton skyline.
The arrival of padel – a rapidly growing sport worldwide – signals the beginning of L2D’s phased transformation of the rooftop. It’s a strategic move to broaden the centre’s appeal across different demographics, from sporty millennials to after-work urbanites looking for recreation and relaxation above the city buzz.
The rooftop activation is about creating safe and interactive urban spaces where people can increase their dwell time. This allows us to remain relevant and continue to attract a broader demographic to the centre.

The rooftop plan is part of a broader 20-year spatial masterplan. By strategically converting previously underutilised rooftop areas into social and recreational zones, L2D is not only hoping to maximise real estate, but future-proofing the property’s value and versatility. This transformation looks to support L2D’s mission to keep pace with global urban development trends, where the emphasis is increasingly on mixed-use, integrated environments that cater to every aspect of modern urban living.
As the project gains momentum, visitors can expect a carefully curated mix of offerings to roll out in phases. Think outdoor events, wellness activations, pop-up restaurants, sky-high sundowners, and community-driven installations – all within a safe, well designed urban sanctuary that hoped to redefine what it means to go to the mall.
