Greenhouse Fire: “We Are Aware Of 8 People Being Taken To Hospital”

Forensic services are having to piece together the sequence of events leading up to a fire that ripped through Sandton’s popular Greenhouse bar on Saturday evening.

In an Instagram post, owners of The Greenhouse reiterated their ‘gratitude that there were no fatalities when the venue burnt down’.
The fire had been extinguished by the time Johannesburg Emergency Management Services (EMS) arrived on the scene.
The area around The Greenhouse has been cordoned off and 24 Central continues to trade as normal.

The Greenhouse looks to open again soon – that is, as soon as the investigation into a weekend fire, that saw staff and patrons evacuate the venue, following the artificial hanging plant ceiling catching fire, is concluded. And not everyone got away unscathed.

We are aware of 8 people being taken to hospital, 6 of which were patrons and two of which were staff members. We remain concerned for the well-being of everyone who was present during the incident. We have offered trauma counseling and medical assistance to all staff and will continue to provide this service as required.

The main act for the evening was the popular South African band GoodLuck, whose appearance was supported by beer brand Castle Lite.

For this specific event, Castle Lite was a co-sponsor of the event and invested in branding, promoters, and the running of Castle Lite specials during the event. As a co-sponsor, Castle Lite was not responsible for any event organising or health and safety elements pertaining to the event. This incident was truly unfortunate.

Whilst the official cause of the fire is still being investigated, owners of The Greenhouse are cooperating with authorities and plan to re-open the popular venue as soon as possible. The Greenhouse interiors, with an abundance of greenery, including the Greenhouse’s signature hanging plant ceiling, were conceptualised by designer Tristan Du Plessis.

The Sandton Times has reached out to the owners of The Greenhouse as well as GoodLuck for comment, but no response has been forthcoming.
