This game-changing offering brings a 50% discount on train fares to a wide range of qualifying passengers, including low-income households, students, scholars, pensioners, and recipients of the South African Social Security Agency’s (SASSA) disability grant.

The launch of KlevaMova marks a pivotal moment in public transport access in South Africa’s economic heartland. Recognising the financial strain many face just to get to work or school, Gautrain, in collaboration with the Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport, has taken a bold step toward alleviating these burdens—making public transport not just efficient and safe, but also more inclusive.

Transport costs remain one of the heaviest financial burdens for many South African households, particularly those located far from economic centres. According to the Gauteng Household Travel Survey, nearly 60% of households spent more than 10% of their income on public transport in 2019/20—an increase from 55% in 2014. This disproportionately impacts families on the periphery of cities who often travel great distances for work, education, or healthcare.

Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport, Kedibone Diale-Tlabela, underscored the importance of the KlevaMova launch during the official announcement.

I am pleased to announce that the Gautrain train fares will now be more affordable. Affordable and accessible public transport is crucial for reducing the cost of living for many South Africans, as it significantly impacts household budgets and access to opportunities.

The MEC also highlighted the country’s historical spatial planning as a major contributor to long and costly daily commutes.

Many people live far from work and opportunities and are faced with high transport costs. KlevaMova forms part of Government’s efforts to make the Gautrain more accessible to a large share of the population in Gauteng.

The KlevaMova discount is specifically aimed at easing the financial burden for individuals and families earning a combined household income of R350 000 or less per year. In addition, the 50% fare discount extends to:
• Students under the age of 25
• Schoolchildren (Scholars)
• Pensioners
• Recipients of the SASSA Disability Grant

Eligible passengers can choose from Weekly, Monthly, and Return Trip fare options under the KlevaMova product suite. To access the discount, applicants must go through a simple approval and verification process by submitting the required documentation.

To apply or learn more, individuals can:
• Call the toll-free Gautrain contact centre at 0800 428 87246 (0800-GAUTRAIN), available daily from 5:30am to 8pm.
• Visit the official website: www.gautrain.co.za
• Visit any Gautrain station (except OR Tambo) from Monday to Saturday, between 8am and 5pm.

The Gautrain is urging not just individuals but businesses and corporates to inform and support their qualifying employees in taking advantage of this significant fare relief. Encouraging the use of more sustainable and efficient public transport can have wide-reaching benefits, including reduced traffic congestion and improved productivity through lower commute stress.

But that’s not all. As part of a broader affordability drive, the Gautrain has also introduced R1 daily parking fares for passengers using its train service, valid from 1 April to 31 July 2025. This initiative is expected to further reduce the cost of commuting and incentivise the use of public transport across a wider demographic.

MEC Kedibone Diale-Tlabela emphasised that the rollout of KlevaMova is aligned with Gauteng’s 25-Year Integrated Transport Master Plan (ITMP25), which envisions a rail-focused, integrated transport network:

A passenger rail network remains the backbone of the province’s modernised and integrated transport system. Taking more people off the roads will bring numerous benefits including less congestion, fewer road accidents, and reduced carbon emissions.

Beyond infrastructure and logistics, KlevaMova represents a commitment to social equity, urban mobility, and the improvement of everyday quality of life. As urban centres grow and evolve, ensuring equitable access to mobility becomes a cornerstone of economic inclusion and social upliftment. By making the Gautrain more accessible and affordable, KlevaMova has the potential to redefine how South Africans view public transport – not just as a necessity, but as a dignified, reliable, and empowering experience.
