Free Gautrain Service For Springboks’ Arrival At OR Tambo

In a grand gesture of celebration and national pride, Gautrain will be offering a complimentary travel experience for Springboks supporters.

  • Fans can head to and from OR Tambo International Airport on Tuesday, 31 October 2023, between 10am to 3pm.
  • Sandton is one of the stations offering the complimentary train service.
  • Free travel is limited to the train service and does not encompass Gautrain buses and midibuses.

This initiative comes on the heels of the Springbok squad’s triumphant return from France, where they secured a historic victory against New Zealand, claiming the Webb Ellis Cup for the fourth time. The heart-stopping final saw South Africa emerge with a 12-11 win, solidifying their status as the first rugby nation to secure four men’s Rugby World Cups.

Notably, the Springboks also achieved the remarkable feat of back-to-back titles, a distinction previously held only by opponents New Zealand. With an unbeaten record in Rugby World Cup finals, South Africa stands alone as the only team to conquer New Zealand in the pinnacle match, accomplishing this extraordinary feat in 1995 and now once again in 2023.

To honour the champions’ return and engage the fervent support of the nation, Gautrain has extended a generous offer of free train services. This complimentary travel opportunity is exclusively available from Park, Sandton, Midrand, and Pretoria stations, catering to individuals wearing Springbok or South African colors and traveling without luggage.

Tshepo Kgobe, the Chief Executive Officer Designate of Gautrain Management Agency, expressed the organization’s excitement to be part of the celebratory events and contribute by facilitating the transportation of passionate Springbok supporters.

The Springboks deserve a rousing South African welcome, and we are bursting with pride.

While extending this goodwill, Gautrain has outlined specific terms and conditions for the free train service:

  1. Stations and Timings: The complimentary train service is exclusively available from Park, Sandton, Midrand, and Pretoria stations.
  2. Attire Requirement: Only individuals adorned in Springbok or South African colours and traveling without luggage are eligible for the free train service.
  3. Travel Times:
o When traveling to the airport, the free service is available between 10am and 12pm.
o When returning from the airport, the free service operates between 12:30pm and 3pm.

This initiative not only reflects the spirit of unity and national pride but also underscores the significance of sports in fostering a sense of community and shared identity. As the nation gathers to welcome home its victorious rugby heroes, Gautrain‘s contribution ensures that supporters can join the festivities with ease and enthusiasm.
