Eskort Continues To Innovate 107 Years On

Eskort, South Africa’s largest pork producer, celebrates an impressive milestone in 2024 – its 107th anniversary.

  • Eskort’s journey began on the banks of a river, where its founders launched a company that would grow into a national entity.
  • Today, Eskort has expanded to include 26 dedicated stores across the country, which will increase to 30 by year’s end with new locations in Alberton, Umhlanga, and Mamsentorte.
  • Beyond these stores, Eskort also supplies its products to major retailers nationwide, offering customers a wide range of pork products.

Founded in 1917 by nine visionary farmers in Estcourt, KwaZulu-Natal, the company has grown from humble beginnings into a household name. Marcelle Pienaar, Eskort’s Marketing Director, provides insight into the brand’s success, its innovative approach, and the reasons why South Africans trust Eskort as their go-to choice for pork.

Eskort’s move into retail stores was a strategic decision that has reshaped its brand. Initially, the company relied on factory stores near its production facilities in Heidelberg and Estcourt. However, the need to balance pork supply led to the creation of more retail stores to sell products that couldn’t be distributed through traditional grocery outlets.

The brand’s stores have become popular destinations not only for their variety but also for their value. In national retail chains, customers can typically find around 40 Eskort products. At the Eskort stores, however, they have access to hundreds of options, showcasing the full spectrum of pork cuts, pre-cooked meals, and even gourmet items. This wide range has solidified Eskort as a favourite for South Africans looking for quality and variety in their protein choices.

In South Africa, pork ranks as the fourth most-consumed protein, trailing behind other meats. This trend stands in stark contrast to global statistics, where pork is the most popular meat, especially in countries like China, Germany, and Brazil. According to Marcelle, this discrepancy is largely due to misconceptions about pork, such as it being a fatty meat. To combat this, Eskort actively promotes pork’s qualities as a lean, nutritious protein source, ideal for a balanced diet.

Eskort’s dedication to innovation is evident in its ever-expanding product offerings. By observing consumer trends and understanding the challenges of modern lifestyles, Eskort has created convenient, ready-to-cook meals that cater to time-strapped families. Popular products like air fryer-ready items, snack packs, and briar packs reflect the company’s commitment to making mealtime easier without compromising on quality. As Marcelle explains, Eskort designs products with convenience in mind, from pork schnitzels to crumbed strips and frikkadels that can be quickly prepared in an air fryer.

Eskort has also tapped into bulk buying as an economical option for customers, offering hampers filled with an assortment of products at discounted prices. These hampers have become popular among families looking to stretch their budget, but they’ve also inspired a unique side industry. Many small-scale entrepreneurs purchase these hampers, resell individual items, and make a modest profit, supporting local economies while bringing Eskort products to new customers.

As the festive season approaches, Eskort is ready with a selection of seasonal favourites. From traditional gammon to innovative offerings like porchetta and prime rib roast, the brand is encouraging South Africans to embrace pork as a staple for their celebrations.
