In the frigid heart of the Antarctic, a legendary story of survival has resurfaced—one that binds together the iron-willed endurance of polar explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton and a modern-day team’s successful quest to uncover his lost ship.
In 1915, Ernest Shackleton’s Endurance was locked in the pack ice of Antarctica’s Weddell Sea, its hull crushed and the icy waters swallowing it whole. Against these unrelenting elements, Shackleton miraculously kept his 27-man crew alive for over a year—a legendary feat of leadership and perseverance in extreme conditions. Over 100 years later, a mission spearheaded by the Falklands Maritime Heritage Trust (FMHT) set out to locate Endurance, lying untouched on the ocean floor since its descent.
Funded and organized by FMHT, this journey was led by polar geographer Dr. John Shears, marine archaeologist Mensun Bound, and expedition subsea manager Nicolas Vincent. Their journey to bring Endurance back into the world of the living would test the boundaries of modern technology and the limits of human resilience.
Aboard the South African icebreaker Agulhas II, the expedition team comprised scientists, archaeologists, and seasoned filmmakers capturing every crucial moment of the mission. Under the guidance of Natalie Hewit, along with historian Dan Snow and a team from History Hit, the events unfolded with an immediacy that has been faithfully documented.

Finally, on 5 March 2022, a century after Shackleton’s death, the team located Endurance at the bottom of the Weddell Sea, in pristine condition and seemingly frozen in time. This discovery not only provides an astonishing glimpse into Shackleton’s imperial trans-Antarctic expedition but also breathes new life into a story that has captivated generations. No artifacts were removed from the wreckage, preserving the integrity of this historical find for future study and exploration.
As much a tribute to Shackleton’s historic expedition as it is to the crew of the Agulhas II, Endurance brings together a formidable line-up of explorers, scientists, and storytellers who have dedicated their lives to unearthing the edge of human experience. By employing cutting-edge technology and a team of seasoned filmmakers, this documentary ensures that Shackleton’s story, once lost to the depths, is now accessible for audiences worldwide.
For all who tune in, it promises to be an unforgettable journey across time and through the depths of Antarctica’s frozen seascape—a timeless tribute to the indomitable will that defines both Shackleton and the brave team who sought to bring his legacy back into the light.
