Some cars are built for speed, some for comfort, and some for utility. And then there’s the Next-Gen Ford Ranger Raptor, which seems to have been built for people who think traffic circles should be taken sideways and that a curb is just an invitation for some light off-roading. This isn’t just a bakkie – it’s an automotive declaration of independence, roaring into the world with 292kW of twin-turbo fury and a stance so aggressive it should probably be on a watch-list.

The Sandton Times took the Raptor for a week-long test in Sandton, which is to say we spent seven days pretending we were contestants on a very expensive, vehicular episode of Survivor: Urban Jungle. Instead of the Namib Desert or some treacherous rock crawl in the Drakensberg, we subjected it to the trials and tribulations of valet parking, luxury mall congestion, and the occasional smug glance from a Range Rover driver who thought we were lost. We weren’t. We were simply deciding whether to engage Baja mode in a Woolworths parking lot.

Let’s start with the engine because, quite frankly, this is the kind of power that makes your morning coffee redundant. The twin-turbo 3.0-litre EcoBoost V6 delivers 292kW and 583Nm of torque, which means the Raptor doesn’t so much accelerate as it does launch itself forward with the determination of a caffeine-fuelled cheetah. The 10-speed automatic transmission is smoother than a politician avoiding direct questions, and it’s programmed to ensure that each shift delivers just the right amount of boost. Whether you’re cruising in traffic or unleashing the South Pacific Fleet on an open road, the Raptor’s power delivery is effortless.

Speaking of unleashing naval power, the exhaust note is a thing of beauty. Ford has thoughtfully provided four settings, allowing you to dial up the drama as needed. Quiet mode ensures you don’t wake the neighbours at 5am, Normal mode keeps things civilised, Sport mode adds a bit more growl, and Baja mode – well, Baja mode turns the whole thing into an action movie soundtrack. It’s like having your own personal orchestra of thunder, and it’s utterly addictive.

Underneath, the Raptor is no ordinary Ranger. It boasts an entirely reworked chassis, reinforced in all the right places to handle the kind of punishment that lesser vehicles would sob uncontrollably over. The suspension is the real star, featuring Fox 2.5-inch Live Valve internal bypass shock absorbers. These aren’t just dampers – they’re an engineering love letter to off-road enthusiasts. They adjust in real time to terrain changes, offering supreme comfort on tarmac and unshakeable confidence on gravel, mud, and just about anything else you throw at it. A bit hard to put to the test on Sandton roads, but you get the idea.

Of course, the Raptor isn’t just about raw power – it’s also packed with enough technology to make a fighter jet blush. There are seven selectable drive modes, including Baja for when you really want to channel your inner Dakar Rally driver. There’s also Trail Control, which acts like cruise control for off-roading, managing acceleration and braking while you focus on not accidentally discovering a new continent. And then there’s ‘R’ MyMode, a customisable setting that lets you program your own combination of steering, suspension, and exhaust preferences. Essentially, it’s the automotive equivalent of setting up your own playlist, except instead of music, you’re fine-tuning how much chaos you want to unleash at any given moment.

Inside, the Raptor is a delightful mix of rugged capability and luxury touches. The jet fighter-inspired sports seats are both comfortable and supportive, making them ideal for long drives or enthusiastic cornering. The 12.4-inch digital instrument cluster is a crisp, high-tech command centre, while the 12-inch centre touchscreen with SYNC 4A ensures that all your infotainment needs are covered. The orange accents throughout the cabin add a bit of flair, though if we’re being honest, they might not be to everyone’s taste – think of them as the automotive equivalent of a trendy but slightly unnecessary garnish on a gourmet dish.

Outside, the Raptor is as subtle as a rock concert in a library. The flared wheel arches, massive F-O-R-D grille, and C-clamp headlights make it clear that this is not a vehicle that blends in. It rides on chunky 17-inch wheels wrapped in all-terrain tyres, ready to devour any surface you point it at – it makes potholes more of a massage than a thud. The rear bumper is tucked up high to improve departure angles, while the bash plate up front is almost twice the size of the standard Ranger’s.

Despite all this ruggedness, the Raptor is surprisingly refined on the road. It glides over bumps with the grace of a much smaller, more delicate car, and the electronically controlled four-wheel drive system provides confidence-inspiring grip in all conditions. The steering, adjustable between Normal, Sport, Comfort, and Off-Road, offers precise control whether you’re navigating city streets or powering through a dirt trail. The overall ride quality is exceptional – firm enough to feel planted, but never jarring or uncomfortable.

But let’s get real for a second: does anyone actually need a Raptor? Maybe. Do you want one? Absolutely. This is a vehicle that makes every drive an event. It turns the mundane into the extraordinary, whether you’re tackling a construction site masquerading as a road, or just pulling up to a fancy restaurant with all the subtlety of a Hollywood blockbuster premiere. It’s unapologetic, bold, and, above all, an absolute riot to drive.

All of this excitement comes in at a cool R1’094’900, including VAT, for the Ranger Raptor 3.0L V6 EcoBoost 4WD 10AT.

So, if you’re the kind of person who thinks life is too short for boring cars, the Next-Gen Ford Ranger Raptor is here to inject some much-needed adventure into your daily routine. Just don’t be surprised if you find yourself taking the long way home. And possibly through a quarry.
