This year, the awards feature nine fiercely contested categories, alongside an exciting new addition for 2025 – the Winners’ Choice Award. Unlike the other categories, this prestigious accolade has no nominees. Instead, past winners collectively vote for a single comedian who consistently delivers and has earned the deep respect of their peers. As the highest honour of the night, this award celebrates a performer whose influence, consistency, and contribution to the comedy scene have been truly exceptional.

Adding to the excitement, three award categories are now open for public voting: Breakthrough Act of the Year, Best Comedy Festival/Show, and the Sauce of the Year Award, presented by Mrs. Ball’s. Mrs. Ball’s, a beloved South African brand, has been actively supporting the comedy industry for the past three years, solidifying its commitment to local talent. Fans have the power to vote for their favourites online once per category and up to 50 times via SMS. By casting a vote, they also stand a chance to win an exclusive VIP experience at the awards ceremony. Voting closes on 27 March 2025 at midnight.

This year’s list of nominees features an incredible mix of fresh faces and well-established names. The Savanna Newcomer Award sees up-and-coming comedians like Daniele Du Plessis, Keketso Hutamo, Khanyisile Ngwenya, Ngosa, and Wesley King vying for recognition as the most promising new talent. The Breakthrough Act of the Year Award, open to public vote, includes Callum Hitchcock, Khabane Moloi, Khanyisa JamJam, Linde Sibanda, and Mbali Gudazi, all of whom have made remarkable strides in the industry over the past year.

For the coveted Headliner of the Year Award, comedic heavyweights Celeste Ntuli, Kagiso KG Mokgadi, Robby Collins, Sifiso Nene, and Tsitsi Chiumya are set to battle it out for the top honor. Meanwhile, the Comedian of the Year category is stacked with powerhouse performers Celeste Ntuli, Kagiso KG Mokgadi, Khanyisa Bunu, Robby Collins, and Sifiso Nene, all of whom have solidified their reputations as comedy royalty.

The Best Solo Show Award recognizes outstanding one-person performances, with Ambrose Uren (African-Ish), Dalin Oliver (90 Day Comedian), Khanyisa JamJam (Sorry For The Weight), Prins Comedian (Prins Live Comedy Tour), and Robby Collins (Come As You Are) all in contention. Meanwhile, the Best Comedy Festival or Show category, which is open to public vote, includes Bioscope Sundays, Celeste Ntuli and The Big Dudes, Laugh Africa Comedy Festival, Mpho Popps Birthday Comedy Special, and That’s Not Funny: Moveable Feast Comedy Night.

The Joe Mafela Award pays tribute to those making waves behind the scenes, with nominees King Flat, Summary, Thabang ER, TT Phasha, and Zicco Sithole recognized for their contributions. The Innovative Comedy Performance Award highlights originality and creativity in comedy, with Céline Tshika, Keith Juluka, Phil de Lange, Rob van Vuuren, and Sophie Joans leading the charge.

Finally, the Sauce of the Year Award, presented by Mrs. Ball’s and open to public vote, honours comedians who bring something extra to the table. This year’s nominees – Carvin H Goldstone, Céline Tshika, Dalin Oliver, Kagiso KG Mokgadi, Mpho Popps, Noko Mashaba, and Rory Petzer – have each added their unique flavour to the comedy landscape.
