MENTALISM with Larry Soffer

Sandton Times Hour

When Larry Soffer tells people he is a mentalist, they immediately think he spends his days unravelling crimes and putting offenders in prison, just like the lead character in the American drama television series ‘The Mentalist’.

We all know that magic encompasses a whole range of different things, from illusions on stage to close-up magic tricks amongst others. It is a performing art in which audiences are entertained by seemingly impossible feats using natural powers. Mentalism comes under the ‘magic’ umbrella and could perhaps be best described as the magic of the mind. It is a sophisticated practice and an incredible skill that takes years to develop.

Done well, mentalism can positively impact the person watching the performance unfold. Not only does it allow the audience to step outside their mundane, everyday life, but it also transports them to a different reality, and inspires them to believe in the impossible to create a better future for themselves.

LIONESS SEASON 2 with Shannon Esra

Sandton Times Hour
Described by critics as “gripping” and “intriguing”, M-Net’s edgy thriller drama Lioness will be back for Season 2 on January 26, 2023 at 8pm. Image: M-Net

Starring Shannon Esra (as Samantha Hugo) alongside an impressive ensemble of supporting actors, the award-nominated Ochre Moving Pictures series follows the story of a woman fresh out of jail for fraud, who returns to a life even more fractured than when she left.

After the cliffhanger finale of Season 1, Season 2 picks up with Adrian Hugo’s (played by Jacques Bessenger) second wife (played by Carla Classen) in desperate search for her missing husband. The fiercely protective mother (as the titular “lioness”) that she is, Samantha must shield her son Liam (played by Joshua Eady), no matter the cost. But when Sam discovers that Adrian’s death was not all it seemed, the lioness goes in for the kill.

Also returning for Season 2 are Natasha Sutherland (Megan); Nokuthula Mavuso (Amo); Fiona Ramsay (Charlotte); Avianah Abrahams (Caitlyn); Frank Rautenbach (Jason); Pulane Rampoana (Bonolo); Jazzara Jaslyn (Miranda); Evan Hengst (Brian); Terrence Ngwila (Sifiso); Ditebogo Ledwaba (Lesedi); Ilana Cilliers (Yvette); and Gerald Steyn (Anton).

Newcomers for the season are award winner Vinette Ebrahim (Barakat), who plays Vera, an introverted and aloof ice queen whose fractured family needs warmth. Carl Beukes (Dominion) plays Max, an enigmatic lone wolf who will do whatever it takes to get the job done in helping his half-sister find justice. Theo Landey (Black Sails) joins the cast as Thomas, a sensitive and intelligent teacher whose kindness lands him in hot water. Ayden Croy (Verstikking) plays Kevin, a warm-hearted young man trying to build a new life after a tragic past. Season 1 of Lioness is available to binge on DStv Catch Up from December 19, 2022 – so if you haven’t yet seen it or need a refresher, it’s an excellent addition to your festive season watchlist.

Lioness Season 2 premieres on M-Net (DStv Channel 101) on January 26, 2023 at 8pm.

CHRISTMAS DISHES with Azraa Harper and Waven Harper

Sandton Times Hour
Azraa loves peri-peri prawns and calamari, while Waven is a big fan of a mutton bunny chow. Image: M-Net

Married couple Azraa and Waven entered MKRSA, having been huge fans of the show for years. Azraa is a baker and entrepreneur while Waven is a personal trainer. Having cultivated an interest in cooking since high school – where they also met and both studied hospitality – their shared food dream is to open an artisan bakery and café where they would make and sell fresh, quality baked goods, host special occasions, and teach others how to bake, decorate cakes, and cook.

They say they cook with their hearts and only measure and weigh ingredients when they’re baking, preferring to feel and taste as they go along because they feel they know what good food should taste like.
