Over the years, Professor David Block has held visiting research positions at prestigious institutions including the Australian National University, the European Southern Observatory in Germany, the California Institute of Technology, the Institute for Astronomy in Hawaii, and Harvard University. Professor David Block, an esteemed astronomer and globally sought-after speaker, has spent over four decades inspiring audiences to “Look Up!” His passion for astronomy and the intersection of science and faith has made him a unique voice in the academic and spiritual communities alike.

 

Elected as a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society of London at just 19, Professor David Block’s illustrious career began with the publication of his first research paper on relativistic astrophysics at the age of 20. This work, published by the Royal Astronomical Society, marked the beginning of a prolific research journey.

 

With over 100 peer-reviewed journal articles to his name, Professor David Block’s research has twice been featured on the cover of the renowned journal Nature. His contributions to the field of astronomy have not only advanced scientific understanding but have also earned him numerous accolades. Among these, he has been recognized with the NSTF-BHP Billiton Award, acknowledging him as one of South Africa’s foremost science communicators, and the Vice-Chancellor’s Research Award, the highest research accolade from the University of the Witwatersrand.

 

Until 2019, Professor David Block served as a professor in the School of Computer Science and Applied Mathematics at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, where he is now an Emeritus Professor. Beyond academia, he is the Director of Reasons to Believe Africa, a ministry dedicated to demonstrating how scientific research affirms the truths of the Bible and the Good News it reveals.

 

Professor David Block’s legacy is one of bridging the gap between science and faith, encouraging a deeper understanding of the universe and our place within it.

Her Regnal Year With Miss South Africa 2024 Mia Le Roux

Mia le Roux from Cape Town has been crowned Miss South Africa 2024. Mia le Roux’s victory was a deeply emotional moment, not just for her but for the countless South Africans who have followed her journey. Born with a hearing impairment, Mia was gifted a cochlear implant at the tender age of two, thanks to the incredible support of her community.

South African Olympic Champion Tatjana Smith

Discovery welcomed Olympic athlete Tatjana Smith to 1 Discovery Place in Sandton on Monday, 19 August 2024, to celebrate her recent achievements and Olympic victories. Image: The Sandton Times

Tatjana Smith wrapped up her illustrious career at the Olympic Games in Paris with a silver medal in the 200m breaststroke on Thursday night.

 

Heading into the competition as the defending champion, having won the 200m gold in Tokyo three years ago, Tatjana faced fierce competition from Kate Douglass of the USA. Kate delivered an inspired performance, setting an Americas record time of 2:19.24, with Tatjana closely following in 2:19.60. The 27-year-old was elated with her silver medal and reflected on the significance of the race afterward.
