WaterCAN is a burgeoning network of citizen science activists dedicated to safeguarding South Africa’s water resources by advocating for clean, safe, and sustainable water. Through the utilization of citizen science, WaterCAN empowers civil society to actively engage in managing water quality testing, data collection, and information dissemination.

Led by Dr. Ferrial Adam, the Executive Manager of WaterCAN, this initiative drives corrective actions by holding stakeholders accountable through advocacy efforts. With over two decades of experience as an environmental justice activist, Ferrial’s background in organizations such as Earthlife Africa and Greenpeace Africa has provided her with a profound understanding of the intersections between government, human rights, politics, and the environment from a grassroots perspective. Armed with a BSc in geology, an MPhil in Environmental Management, and a PhD focused on citizen science and environmental justice in South Africa’s water sector, Ferrial’s research underscores the pivotal role of science and environmental information in empowering communities to challenge authorities and corporations.

Through policy analysis, advocacy, education, and citizen science initiatives, WaterCAN aims to build networks, share data, train citizen scientists, and cultivate an activist approach to water resource protection. By enabling citizens to understand their rights and hold authorities accountable, WaterCAN endeavours to catalyse meaningful change in South Africa’s water governance landscape.

The recent water challenges in Johannesburg has warranted a civil society meeting. WaterCAN will be hosting a a civil society meeting to address the Johannesburg water crisis on 15 March 2024 at 2pm via ZOOM. Concerns and challenges will be raised and planning a way forward is on the agenda.
