2023 Rugby World Cup With Former Springbok Rugby Player Bob Skinstad

Sandton Times Hour
The timing of the Rugby World Cup 2023 holds a special significance, resonating with the celebration of two centuries since the game of rugby football took its fledgling steps into existence. Image: The Sandton Times

France’s role as the host of the 10th Men’s Rugby World Cup is no mere coincidence. A testament to its rich rugby heritage, this marks the second time the nation has embraced this prestigious responsibility since its unforgettable stint in 2007. The echoes of the past will undoubtedly add a layer of nostalgia and inspiration as teams from across the globe battle it out on the hallowed grounds of French rugby.

It was in 1823 that a spirited pupil at Rugby School, William Webb Ellis, exhibited an audacious disregard for conventional rules. His decision to catch the ball and embark on a daring run laid the groundwork for a sport that would capture hearts and minds worldwide. As the rugby community gathers to commemorate this landmark moment, the tournament becomes not just a sporting spectacle, but a tribute to the innovation and indomitable spirit that birthed the game.

Ticket Prices For Domestic Flights With FlySafair CMO Kirby Gordon

Sandton Times Hour
Airlines are now reassessing their market positions, with a focus on operational costs per seat. Image: FlySafair

The South African domestic passenger aviation market is on the path to recovery and stabilization, with available seats nearing 80% of pre-pandemic 2019 levels. While reaching the full 100% benchmark would be ideal, these figures indicate a renewed equilibrium in the market.

Several factors have played a role in this stabilization. South Africa’s national economic performance has weakened, coupled with high unemployment rates and an increasing cost of living for consumers due to rising interest rates. For airlines, operational costs have surged, primarily driven by higher fuel prices and the volatile rand-dollar exchange rate.

Kirby Gordon, Chief Marketing Officer at FlySafair, shared insights into the current aviation landscape. He emphasized that despite occasional turbulence, the market supply has been adequately addressed by current players. This ensures that there isn’t an upward trajectory in prices due to seat shortages.

The industry’s present status quo is apparent, especially during the low season, such as May and August, when airlines offered attractive deals, signaling a return to normalcy. This translates to reasonably priced and sustainable domestic flight options for consumers. While price levels may never return to their 2019 standards due to dynamic factors like fuel prices and exchange rates, the current pricing structure is deemed both fair and sustainable.

Full-service carriers, known for their additional amenities, such as complimentary luggage, seat selections, loyalty programs, and meals, must offer genuine value to justify their pricing. As South Africa transitions from winter to spring, consumers are gearing up for the eagerly awaited summer holiday season. With the market returning to equilibrium, the timeless advice for booking flights holds true: book early to secure the best fares.
