Harmful Ingredients Found In Ultra-Processed Foods With Healthy Living Alliance (HEALA) Communications Manager Zukiswa Zimela

HEALA, the Healthy Living Alliance, is leading the charge for food transparency and child protection with its innovative campaign, ‘Think Inside the Box.’ The campaign aims to highlight the harmful ingredients found in ultra-processed foods and advocates for front-of-package warning labels on unhealthy packaged food.

In the build-up to the 21 July 2023 deadline for public comments on the draft government regulations, the ‘Think Inside the Box’ campaign educated consumers about the contents of the products they consume. Children, who are often targeted by aggressive food and beverage advertising, are particularly vulnerable, making bold warning labels essential to help parents safeguard their families.

The campaign’s centrepiece is a high-visibility activation at the Sandton Gautrain Station, featuring life-size, 3D wire sculptures of children filled with junk food and beverage cartons. This eye-catching display visually represents the composition of unhealthy diets and emphasizes the importance of warning labels to make informed food choices. A QR code on-site links consumers to more campaign information and enables them to comment on the draft regulations.

Ultra-processed foods, high in saturated fats, salt, and sugar, contribute to obesity and diet-related noncommunicable diseases like heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and some cancers. Childhood obesity, affecting over 13% of South African children, leads to severe health issues and emotional challenges.

A 2018 study in the Western Cape revealed that 80% of foods in South African supermarkets were ultra-processed. A public opinion survey in 2022 showed strong support for government adoption of front-of-package labels to regulate unhealthy food access.

Once the regulations are enacted, front-of-package warning labels in the shape of a black triangle will help consumers quickly assess a product’s ingredients, making healthier choices and reducing diet-related noncommunicable diseases. Empowered by these regulations, consumers can prioritize whole, fresh foods for themselves and their children’s well-being.
