Update: Sandton Convention Centre To Host AKA Memorial

The Sandton Convention Centre (SCC) will be the venue for the AKA Memorial service. The music icon and culture figure Kiernan Forbes better known as AKA, was shot and killed outside Wish restaurant on Florida Road in Durban on February 10, 2023.

 

  • There has been an outpouring of grief from his fans, friends, and family following his murder.
  • AKA’s close friend and culinary man, Tebello “Tibz” Motsoane, was also killed in the Florida Road shooting.
  • The South African Police Service (SAPS) have launched a manhunt for the shooters.

Following a media briefing by the Forbes family at Rockets in Bryanston, details of the AKA Memorial have been made available. The AKA Memorial will be limited to 2000 people in the venue, but mourners and fans are expected to line the streets of Sandton to pay their respects. Plans are being made for two corners for potential gatherings and for mourners to leave flowers. Partial road closures around the Sandton Convention Centre (SCC) will be manned by the event security as well as the South African Police Service (SAPS) and Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD). From Friday morning, JMPD will be managing traffic flow and access at six key intersections, including:

  • Maude and Fifth Street
  • Maude and West Street
  • Alice and Fifth Street
  • West and Katherine Street
  • West and Rivonia Road

Complimentary tickets to the AKA Memorial have been sold out and no further tickets will be issued at the door. The public service will be streamed online via YouTube.

Sony Music Entertainment Africa confirmed that the Forbes family continues to celebrate the life of their son and to honor his legacy, will proceed with the release of AKA’s THE MASS COUNTRY album on February 24, 2023 as planned.

 

The man also known as SUPA MEGA will buried at a private funeral on February 18. He leaves behind his daughter, Kairo.
