This week’s hottest launch in greater Sandton, the Radisson RED in Rosebank celebrated its Grand Opening with a boutique capacity, bringing together key stakeholders for a night of fashion, art, and substance.

  • Radisson RED is a premium hotel experience that presents a playful twist on the conventional Radisson experience.

  • A rooftop with unparalleled views of Johannesburg and a lap pool are some of the highlights of the Radisson RED in Rosebank.

There is nowhere else to have been on Thursday night but at the Radisson RED in Rosebank where the hotel made its official debut. Having opened its doors during the pandemic, it was finally time to bring together cultural, corporate, and cosmopolitan guests to showcase this unique upscale offering, blended with a fun night out. Guests dressed up in urban elegance, and a splash of red, to bring the hotel’s funky essence to life.

Located in the Jacaranda tree-filled Rosebank, South Africa’s latest Radisson RED has been operating for just four months, and took the opportunity now, to celebrate the hotel’s successful entry into the market, positioning itself as the hot-spot for after-work sunsets on the RED Rooftop or a hotel stay with a difference. Appealing to the young at heart to live, work and play at and share the hotel’s dynamic vision for the future, the launch event captured all the creative essence of the brand.

The event theme “An Ode to African Art” was brought to life with a UV lit drumming circle, oversized mirror ball, a champagne bar, RED Rooftop DJ line-up, and a couture popup with young designers from the Villioti Fashion Institute. For those more adventurous, the 7th-floor hotel rooms were converted into a series of experiences, including a hotel suite karaoke room, an arcade, and a floor to ceiling filled balloon suite, with one lucky balloon revealing a hotel stay.

Knowing there was a change in traveler behaviour and expectations, in 2014 we launched the upscale Radisson RED brand, which presents a playful twist on the conventional. South Africa remains a key African market for Radisson Hotel Group, where our portfolio now consists of 16 hotels in operation and under development across four brands. I could not think of a better location than Rosebank, Johannesburg as our next RED flag on the African map.

Since opening in August, the hotel has focused on connecting with the local community and on building a pulse of its own that is fuelled by creativity. This was a vision that the owners, RDC Properties, felt strongly about from the onset.

The ultimate objective for us was that this hotel becomes the heart of the social and cultural life of the city. In pursuit of this unique concept we convinced the design team to use “real artworks”, and we decided that we would engage with the local and international community of artists to create a hotel that inspires.

In tune with the pulse of Rosebank’s art scene, Radisson RED in Rosebank is a living gallery featuring work by Jake Singer, sculptor Marlene Steyn, and Usha Seejarim. The art inside the hotel’s common areas is on a 6-month rotation and currently features Ghanaian photographer, Prince Gyasi. The mixture of art, tech-savvy solutions, and friendly service create social and flexible spaces that energize and inspire guests. Inside each stylish room, African wallpaper and modern finishes complete the curated experience.

The past three months have been incredible. It has been inspiring to see the city and community embrace the hotel and the bold Radisson RED brand. We’re proud to be a place where locals and visitors can work, play and stay and it has been exciting to begin realizing this vision. From welcoming trendsetters for after-work drinks on the RED Roof to hosting local corporates and start-ups for socially distanced meetings and events in our flexible event studios, the hotel has become a buzz of activity and connection. In the short time that Radisson RED Johannesburg Rosebank has been open, we have been proud to cement ourselves as a hotel that supports and celebrates art.
