  • Between 22 December 2024, and 6 January 2025, the airline transported 84’000 passengers to and from Africa, marking its busiest festive season yet.
  • This is a near 100% increase in passengers during the 2024-2025 festive season compared to the pre-pandemic period of 2019-2020.
  • Qatar Airways first touched down in South Africa on 16 January 2005, with its inaugural routes to Johannesburg and Cape Town.

Since 2005, Qatar Airways has established itself as a key player in South Africa’s aviation industry, currently offering up to 33 weekly flights across Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Durban. Passenger demand has grown steadily, with occupancy rates rising from 60-75% in 2019 to an impressive 90% over the past year, according to the airline.

This landmark achievement demonstrates Qatar Airways’ commitment to increasing connectivity across Africa, as well as the rising demand for our award-winning travel experience. For this milestone to come at a time when we are also marking our 20th year of flying to South Africa makes it even more special.

Thierry emphasised the airline’s dedication to fostering economic growth and building lasting relationships with South Africa. Notably, Qatar Airways pushed thrrough challenging times, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, and has invested in one of the country’s airlines through a partnership with Airlink.

Alexander Leibner, Founder & Managing Editor of The Sandton Times, recalls the airline’s memorable launch event in 2005.

The evening’s highlight was a headline-making ‘5-Star’ light display over the Sandton skyline, marking Qatar Airways’ first foray into South Africa. QR580 from Doha arrived at Johannesburg International Airport early that morning, followed by a short flight to Cape Town.

Over the years, Qatar Airways has gone beyond passenger service to support South Africa in multiple ways. For instance, young chefs from South Africa’s renowned Capsicum Culinary Studio have joined Qatar Airways, contributing their expertise to onboard dining. The airline’s menus also feature a nod to South Africa’s culinary heritage, with dishes like biltong beef soup, lamb potjie, and bunny chow delighting passengers.

In addition to enriching the travel experience, Qatar Airways Cargo has played a crucial role in facilitating South Africa’s trade. The airline has helped export local produce to global markets and supported wildlife conservation efforts by repatriating animals to their natural habitats. Looking ahead, Qatar Airways aims to continue setting the standard for luxury and convenience in air travel while supporting South Africa’s economic growth.
