It’s a generation that can still hear the unforgettable screech of dial-up internet connecting and yet can’t quite remember if they took their daily statins. Sounds like prime comedy material, right?
As one of South Africa’s most celebrated comics, Nik Rabinowitz has spent nearly two decades carving out a place for himself in the comedy scene, and his latest offering proves he’s only getting better with age (much like his knee, his sex life, and his tolerance for lactose). With Geriatric Millennial, Nik brings his sharp wit and relatable storytelling to the stage, offering a hilarious, painfully true-to-life look at what it means to exist in the strange liminal space between Gen X and Gen Y.
Nik, who hails from a farm outside Cape Town, grew up in a world far removed from the bustling urban centres. His childhood was spent climbing trees, acting as the self-appointed commentator for his own rugby games, and learning to crochet underpants at a Waldorf school – a quirky experience that no doubt helped shape his uniquely absurd perspective on life.
Despite his creative upbringing, Nik took a rather unexpected academic route, graduating with a Bachelor of Business Science (Honours in Organisational Psychology) from the University of Cape Town. However, the corporate world wasn’t quite in the cards for him. Instead, he embarked on a year-long adventure touring Africa with a travelling theatre company before fully embracing the world of stand-up comedy.
Fast-forward nearly 20 years, and Nik Rabinowitz is a household name, his brand of humour resonating with audiences both in South Africa and beyond. But, as he points out in Geriatric Millennial, the comedian’s life is not without its challenges. With the pangs of aging creeping in (and a knee injury that never really healed properly back in the ’90s), Nik’s comedy draws on the relatable frustration and humour that comes with being a millennial trying to navigate the mess that is modern adulthood.
Geriatric Millennial touches on all the hallmarks of this unique generation: from the inability to accept that reading glasses are no longer a choice but a necessity, to the inexplicable joy of scrolling through memes that seem to speak directly to one’s creaky joints and thinning hair. Nik cleverly explores how millennials, who once prided themselves on their tech-savviness, are now utterly confused by the latest app updates or the mysteries of digital life.
You’ll find yourself nodding along to his tales of trying to play padel with a “dicky knee” that’s only worsened over the years (don’t worry, he’s got a term for everything: his knee, his sex life, and his lactose intolerance all get a playful mention). Nik’s ability to take the mundane, the cringe-worthy, and the universally awkward, and turn it into comedy gold, has made him one of the most beloved comedians in South Africa.
So, if you’ve ever experienced the growing pains of turning 30, 40, or even 50, Geriatric Millennial is an absolute must-see. Whether you’re struggling to read the fine print on your phone or lamenting the fact that your body just doesn’t bounce back quite like it used to, Nik’s special will leave you laughing – and perhaps also reaching for your reading glasses.
