The Sandton Times had the pleasure of joining motoring media and content creators at the launch event, where Suzuki proved once again why it’s a front-runner in bringing fresh energy to its communication. Set against the picturesque backdrop of Stellenbosch, the day was a whirlwind of activities: Gymkhana challenges, spirited test drives, a graffiti-inspired live art installation featuring the Swift itself, and a flash mob that turned the atmosphere electric.
With over 9-million units sold globally since its debut in 2004, the Swift has become a staple of compact car culture with a solid cult following, to greater or lesser extend like the Suzuki Jimny. Suzuki, mindful of its winning formula, has chosen evolution over revolution for this model. The new Swift retains the instantly recognisable silhouette that fans adore but introduces subtle tweaks to keep things fresh.
Up front, restyled headlight clusters with L-shaped signature lamps lend a modern edge, while the oval radiator grille finished in piano black and a re-sculpted bumper add a dose of sophistication. The clamshell bonnet and iconic blacked-out A- and B-pillars, essential to the “floating roof” design, remain, but the hidden rear door handles of its predecessor have been replaced with conventional ones for improved usability. The rear of the car is equally stylish, featuring 3D LED taillights, a sculpted tailgate with an integrated spoiler, and a refreshed bumper design that ties it all together with flair.
Inside, the cabin delivers a mix of practicality and comfort. The wrap-around dashboard now features horizontal air vents and centre controls angled towards the driver, ensuring an ergonomic layout that feels intuitive. Higher trims, like the GLX, boast a nine-inch touchscreen infotainment system, while the mid-range GL+ offers a seven-inch unit with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration.
Practicality is key, with 265 litres of boot space that can expand to 580 litres with the rear seats folded down. The redesigned front seats provide a blend of comfort and support, making long drives a breeze, while black fabric upholstery with embossed patterns adds a touch of refinement. Storage solutions abound, with cupholders, door pockets, and a glovebox catering to the modern driver’s needs.
Out on the road, the Swift continues to deliver the driving pleasure that has always been its hallmark. Built on Suzuki’s HEARTECT platform, the fourth-generation model is both lighter and more rigid, resulting in sharper handling and a more responsive feel. Weighing between 908kg and 945kg, the Swift benefits from an excellent power-to-weight ratio that makes it lively and engaging. The re-calibrated suspension, featuring MacPherson struts up front and a torsion beam at the rear, strikes the perfect balance between comfort and cornering prowess. Powering the Swift is Suzuki’s new Z12E 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol engine, delivering 60kW and 112Nm of torque. This engine is not only peppy but also incredibly efficient, achieving a combined fuel consumption figure of just 4.4 litres per 100km. Whether navigating city streets or cruising through the countryside, the Swift proves to be both fun and frugal in South Africa’s current fuel climate.
Safety remains a top priority, with every model equipped with six airbags, ABS with EBD, Brake Assist, Electronic Stability Control, and ISOFIX child seat anchors. Additional features like three-point seat-belts for all passengers and visual reminders further enhance the Swift’s safety credentials. Suzuki has also ensured that the Swift meets the diverse needs of its customers by offering three distinct trims. The entry-level GL provides essential features at an accessible price, while the mid-range GL+ adds modern conveniences such as alloy wheels and smartphone connectivity. The flagship GLX takes things to another level with diamond-cut alloy wheels, LED lighting, keyless entry, push-button start, and a host of premium touches that elevate the overall experience.
The new Swift has already made waves, being named a semi-finalist for the South African Guild of Mobility Journalists’ 2025 Car of the Year competition. It has also scooped up the 2025 RJC Car of the Year award in Japan and secured a spot as a finalist in the Best Budget Car category of the Cars.co.za Consumer Awards. With prices starting at R219’900 for the GL manual and topping out at R284’900 for the GLX CVT, the Swift offers exceptional value for money, backed by a two-year/30’000km service plan and a five-year/200’000km promotional warranty.
Suzuki has crafted a hatchback that ticks all the boxes: stylish, practical, safe, efficient, and above all, a good drive. Whether you’re a long-time fan or a newcomer to the brand, this little hatchback promises to deliver swiftly.
