Luyanda is a dynamic 24-year-old with an inspiring story of resilience and advocacy. Born in Durban and raised in Johannesburg, Luyanda’s upbringing in a large, supportive family shaped her into the determined woman she is today. With a background in fashion design and digital marketing, she has seamlessly merged her artistic flair with business acumen, becoming a force in the fashion industry.

By the age of 16, she had already launched her first fashion show – a testament to her entrepreneurial spirit. Her career reached new heights in 2024 when she worked as an art director and stylist for a major music video. Inspired by fashion icons Olivier Rousteing and David Tlale, she aspires to push creative boundaries while advocating for sustainable fashion and inclusive representation.

But Luyanda’s journey is not just about fashion; it is about impact. As a Sunday school teacher and mentor, she dedicates her time to uplifting young minds.

I am a product of servant leadership. The impact others have had on my life inspires me to do the same for others.

Her philosophy? “One day or day one”. It is a reminder that every great journey begins with a single step. For Luyanda, Miss Grand South Africa is more than a competition. It is a platform to amplify her advocacy for youth empowerment and child safety.

I bring a fresh perspective—one that combines artistry with purpose. I want to inspire young girls to dream beyond their circumstances.

With the grand finale on the horizon, she remains laser-focused on her goals, ready to represent South Africa on the global stage in Thailand.

Joining Luyanda, at just 23, is Tara-Linn Mehl – a force to be reckoned with in South African film, business, and pageantry. Born in Cape Town and raised in Durban, her background has given her a deep appreciation for diverse cultures and perspectives. While her family’s roots lie in the construction industry, she chose to forge her own path, launching her production company, Blue Crane Motion Pictures, and making waves in the film industry.

Her journey has been one of resilience and reinvention. In 2023, she faced exploitation by fraudulent producers who stole her work, an experience that strengthened her resolve.

Shortcuts never lead to long-term success.

Undeterred, she pressed on, starring in two feature films and refining her craft in preparation for her second attempt at Miss Grand South Africa. Her passion for pageantry was ignited in 2019, and though she fell short of the Top 11 in 2023, she used the experience to fuel her comeback. Now, in 2025, she is stronger, more refined, and ready to claim the crown. She attributes her success to what she calls the 4 B’s: Beauty, Body, Brains, and Business.

Confidence is key, but so is humility and gratitude.

Miss Grand South Africa’s War and Violence Campaign resonates deeply with her. Having partnered with the Red Cross War Memorial Hospital in Cape Town – the very hospital that saved her life as a newborn – she is committed to giving back.

As the countdown to the grand finale begins, one thing is certain: whether or not they take the crown, Luyanda Mthembu and Tara-Linn Mehl are already achieving in their own right. And should one of them go on to represent South Africa at Miss Grand International in Thailand, the world will be watching as she shines with purpose, passion, and undeniable grace.
