LUXURY WATCH GANG ON THE LOOKOUT WARNS SAPS

The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Sandton is warning residence that the notorious “Rolex Gang” continues to target expensive timepiece owners in the Sandton area.

  • SAPS investigations are showing that most luxury wristwatch robbery victims are spotted in public places and then followed.
  • When wearing a luxury watch in public, it’s best to have it covered, advises police.
  • Expensive timepiece owners need to remain vigilant when wearing their watches in public.

The gang’s modus operandi is to follow their victim from places like restaurants or malls to a point where they will have an opportunity to rob the unsuspecting owner of their luxury wristwatch.

An incident took place last week at a fuel station, corner Sandton Drive and Marie Avenue in Parkmore, where two men with firearms, jumped out of a Hyundai i10 and approached the victim in his car. They ordered the victim to get out of the car and took his Rolex watch and iPhone 11 Pro. The gang fled the scene in a yellow and black VW Polo.

Police are urging residents to be vigilant at all times and to wear expensive wristwatches discreetly when going out in public, like restaurants or malls, or best, leave expensive timepieces locked up at home. Sandton SAPS Station Commander urges members of the community to report any criminal activities or any suspicious vehicles in the area to CRIMESTOP 08600-10111 or Sandton SAPS 011-722-4200.
