President Cyril Ramaphosa has announced that the 2021 local government elections will take place on Wednesday, 27 October 2021.
- The Local Government Elections will provide the basis for the functioning and delivery of a range of services and infrastructure requirements for those living in greater Sandton.
- Held every five years, the last Local Government Elections took place in 2016.
- South Africa, along with many other countries, will have to manage the elections amidst the Covid-19 pandemic.

This will be the sixth time under South Africa’s democratic dispensation that voters will elect leadership and public representatives at metropolitan, district and local level.
Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, will follow the necessary legal process to proclaim the date and undertake other requirements.
The President urges eligible and especially first-time voters, to ensure they are registered to participate in the elections.
