How To Ride The Gautrain For Free This Weekend

This weekend, Gautrain is inviting Gauteng residents to experience its world-class public transport system for free on 24 and 25 May 2025.

  • Bring up to three guests and explore Gauteng with seamless, cost-free train travel for a day.
  • Eligible residents can also sign up for KlevaMova and get 50% off future Gautrain fares.
  • Limited seats mean early registration is essential for this once-off free travel opportunity.
  • Visit www.sandtontimes.co.za for more stories.

In a move to promote greater accessibility and affordable mobility across the province, the Gautrain is rolling out a limited-time offer that allows pre-registered individuals and up to three guests each to travel without charge for an entire day. To access this exclusive offer, participants must register online by 21 May 2025 on the KlevaMova website, as seats are limited and allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.

Upon arriving at any Gautrain station over the weekend, registered passengers will be welcomed by designated promoters who will verify their registration and provide them and their guests with wristbands, enabling seamless free travel throughout the day. In addition to facilitating entry, these promoters will also assist interested commuters with registering for Gautrain’s newly launched KlevaMova product – a cost-saving initiative aimed at significantly reducing travel expenses for eligible users.

KlevaMova offers a substantial 50% discount on train fares and is available in Weekly, Monthly, and return trip formats. Designed with inclusivity in mind, this product is available to residents in households with a combined annual income of R350’000 or less, students under the age of 25, schoolchildren, pensioners, and recipients of SASSA’s disability grant.

To qualify for the KlevaMova product, individuals are required to complete an application process that includes submitting relevant documentation for approval and verification.

The weekend initiative is part of a broader campaign to enhance public transport access and encourage more Gauteng residents to consider sustainable commuting options. The Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport, Kedibone Diale-Tlabela, has encouraged eligible individuals to sign up for KlevaMova, emphasising the programme’s potential to improve daily life by making public transport more affordable. The promotion reflects an ongoing commitment to inclusivity and the creation of a connected province where all residents, regardless of their financial status, have access to reliable, safe, and efficient transport.

As the province looks to support economic growth through improved mobility, initiatives like KlevaMova are crucial. Affordable transport empowers people to pursue jobs, education, and social opportunities that might otherwise be out of reach, thereby contributing to broader economic participation and upliftment. The free weekend travel experience offers more than just a ride – it presents an opportunity for residents to re-imagine their daily commute and see the long-term benefits of switching to a smart, cost-effective public transport service.

For those interested in taking advantage of this offer or applying for the KlevaMova discount, assistance is readily available. The Gautrain can be contacted on their toll-free number 0800 428 87246 (0800 GAUTRAIN) daily from 5:30am to 8pm. Additional information can also be found on the Gautrain website or by visiting a Gautrain station, excluding OR Tambo International Airport, from Monday to Saturday between 8am and 5pm.

By opening up its services for free for a weekend and offering substantial discounts through the KlevaMova product, the Gautrain continues to demonstrate its role in shaping a more equitable and economically dynamic Gauteng. Those who qualify are encouraged to register and enjoy the experience of fast, reliable travel, while exploring ways to make this premium transport service a part of their everyday routine at half the cost.
