In the TripAdvisor Travelers’ Choice Awards 2022, Dubai was named the world’s top destination for “city lovers” and the No. 4 destination for “food lovers”. The MICHELIN Guide Dubai, which was released in June, sheds light on Dubai’s status as a global gastronomy hub and offers new insights into the diversity, creativity, and multicultural nature of the city’s culinary scene, which draws inspiration from the cuisines of more than 200 different nationalities that call the city home, including those from Africa.

The DET traveled to South Africa with a number of companies, including hotels, hospitals, and other players in the Dubai tourism industry. The tour visited key South African cities, including Cape Town and Durban, before closing out in Sandton, as part of a multi-city roadshow. Breakout networking sessions, partner presentations, one-on-one meetings, and updates on medical facilities were all important aspects of the event. The Dubai Tourism trip of South Africa is a component of DET’s dedication to Africa.

As Dubai continues to welcome tourists from around the world, we are focused on accelerating momentum even further driven by the vision of our leadership to make Dubai the world’s most visited destination and the best city in the world to live in and work.

The most recent TripAdvisor ranking is the outcome of a carefully thought-out, multifaceted approach to maintain Dubai’s safety, accessibility, and openness. According to the most recent DET tourism statistics, from January to May 2022, hotels in Dubai maintained an average occupancy rate of 76%. In terms of hotel occupancy, Dubai placed first globally during the period of January to April 2022, ahead of major international cities including New York (61%), London (60%), and Paris (57%).

This South Africa visit by a major delegation of Dubai’s tourism ecosystem reflects our commitment to fostering enhanced collaboration and building quality trade partnerships in this very important market. During the visit, our delegation will explore opportunities for mutual cooperation and highlight the diversity of our offering, especially those catering to the interests of South African travelers, such as the variety of adventure experiences and beach getaways in the city, as well as our sustainability and nature offerings.

The Department of Economy and Tourism (DET) in Dubai is charged with assisting the Government in realizing its competitiveness vision to position the emirate as a major hub for global economy and tourism and in raising the emirate’s economic and tourism competitiveness indicators. Dubai’s ultimate goal is to position Dubai as the world’s leading commercial center, investment hub, and tourism destination.

We will also showcase Dubai as the ideal winter sun holiday hub for travelers from this market. We look forward to working closely with our partners in South Africa to instill confidence and trust in both business and leisure travelers alike and reassure them that Dubai remains open, safe, accessible, and committed to delivering exceptional destination experiences.
