We Tried It: Casual Fine-Dining At The Waterside Restaurant

Tempting guests for a spot of ocean-side dining on the ground floor of the Pierhead Building is The Waterside Restaurant – a sophisticated, but more casual menu offering from the La Colombe Group that guests can enjoy both indoors, and el fresco.

  • In 2021 La Colombe opened two new restaurants, situated at the iconic V&A Waterfront: PIER Restaurant and The Waterside Restaurant.
  • Situated on the ground floor, The Waterside Restaurant shares its view with PIER Restaurant in the Pierhead Building.
  • Offering a taster of the La Colombe Group world, The Waterside delivers on service and dishes even with a more boutique menu.

Ranking on the WORLD’S 50 BEST RESTAURANT LIST year on year, the La Colombe Group have built up their reputation for one of South Africa’s must visit dining experiences and now, their latest offering provides those who’ve never stepped into the world of fine-dining, a taste that could become a dining affair.

Having enjoyed a lunch at the pinnacle of the La Colombe Group of restaurants, at La Colombe in 2021, The Sandton Times headed down to Cape Town to take a seat at the table of two new restaurants in the La Colombe Group, centrally located at the V&A Waterfront, a bit closer to the Mother City’s heart.

Whilst not everyone may have the time, money or appetite to travel to some of the La Colombe Group restaurants in the most scenic parts of the Cape, The Waterside offers diners two different menus – a 4-course menu with selected choices available to enjoy, or a more formal 8-course tasting menu – making it the ideal option for all occasions – from a working lunch to celebratory meal with friends – or an impromptu pop-in.

Bringing her expertise to the kitchen is Roxy Mudie, who is Head Chef, having previously worked as Sous Chef at both La Colombe and Protégé. Van Zyl Van der Merwe, long-standing La Colombe alumnus, is the Front of House Manager, whose attentive ear to all our requests ensured we left lunch with nothing un-tried.

Taking a peek at The Waterside’s menu, we’ve picked some of our stand-out dishes to entice your taste buds:

Milk Bun

A warm, soft bun served with a selection spreads and bites as an overture to the courses.

Salmon | Shiitake | Avocado | Thai Broth

Lite and fresh, a fusion of Asian flavours come together in a dish as appealing to the eye as it is to the palate.

Grass-Fed Beef | Smoked Garlic | Madagascan Peppercorn

A classic combination served to perfection – even better paired with a glass of wine.

Mango | Pistachio | Milk Chocolate

A favourite, the combination of chocolate and pistachio is not to be beaten, with a hint of fresh fruit.

Selection of Local Cheeses | Preserves | Bread | Crackers

A great ending to lunch – a selection of cheeses and preserve.

Particularly notable are the incredible non-alcoholic cocktails. More than just a simple mixture of various fruit juices, the bar team goes the extra mile to conjure up a drink as sophisticated as its alcohol infused counterparts – most likely even better!

The Waterside, situated away from the hustle and bustle of the Victoria Wharf, offers an un-intimidating step into a world of tranquillity set to iconic views of the V&A Waterfront harbour. Simplicity is at the heart of The Waterside’s décor and design, using natural woods and dynamic furniture pieces, allowing the dishes and service to really shine offering a different, but equally exceptional, dining experience.
