Almost 3 out of 5 people, from that same study, indicated that ‘eating well’ may lift their spirits, and more than a third reported that some of their most prized memories involve food. A further 27% identify as ‘foodies’, and 24% consider themselves ‘feeders’.

Paul Maciel, also known as The Secret Jozi Chef, has been working in the food business for more than 20 years. He began by opening the acclaimed restaurant Pronto before moving on to establish the wildly popular social cooking space The Cookery in Johannesburg. Paul thinks that if you enjoy eating good cuisine, you can definitely make amazing food because cooking is a natural process.

Paul, who is of Luso Indian descent, has many fond memories involving food, particularly those involving his mother, grandmother, and aunts (as well as his dad, of course), who were always great at creating a wonderful, joyful environment where the sharing of culinary knowledge was almost as important as the food itself. The Cookery offers a range of classes from a chance to discover and master some beloved and classic Greek recipes to dishes that make Turkish food so popular. If Tacos & Tequila are more your thing, there’s a class for that too!
