Fiesta Latina, the 5th annual latino culture, food and music festival returns this Saturday, September 17 to Marks Park in Emmarentia to entertain niñas y niños, big and small.

Fiesta Latina celebrates Joburg’s growing Latino community and their vibrant heritage. This years event promises to bring visitors an incredible smorgasbord of entertainment, a diverse selection of food from Central and South America, handmade crafts, visual artists, and an interactive festival environment with activities for the whole family.

The music line-up includes Latino bands El Cantante, Los Hermanos, César and Nuevo Latino, and En Fuego, with popular Latin hits, salsa, reggae, samba, Afro-Cuban music and more. Mariachi fans are in for a treat when Mexican singer Veronica “La Voz de Mexico” takes to the stage.

There will also be folkloric dance performances from across Latin America, featuring an explosion of brilliantly coloured costumes and time-honoured traditions. Come experience the “Bailaton” dance marathon, the excitement of piñata breaking, and typical games. A kids play area will keep the little ones entertained, whilst adults can peruse the market stalls featuring local and international products. There will be many prizes up for grabs too.

One of the most popular areas of the festival is “Taste of Latino America.” From authentic Mexican tacos to Venezuelan arepas, Peruvian ceviche to Argentinean asado, and everything in between, enjoy some of the most varied and delicious Latin food in Gauteng. In fact, it is the only place on the continent that one can find so many authentic Latin cuisines in one place!

New to the Fiesta Latina this year, is a display of alpacas. These small, gentle animals are of the camelid family, and are from the Andes of Peru.

“Latinos love meeting people. We love socializing and sharing our culture. People arrive as strangers, but leave as amigos.”

– Festival Organizer, César Alvarado
