‘The Magic Box’ initially premiered with resounding success in January 2024 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. This English-language production features an all-South African cast and crew, bringing a unique and vibrant energy to the stage. The musical immerses audiences in an unparalleled theatrical adventure, combining puppetry, elaborate costumes, and innovative projections to create a sensory feast.

Songs from beloved Disney films such as A Whole New World (ALADDIN), We Don’t Talk About Bruno (ENCANTO), How Far I’ll Go (MOANA), Circle of Life (THE LION KING), Let It Go (FROZEN), and This Wish (WISH) are interwoven into the narrative, bringing Disney’s timeless characters and stories to life.
The show is directed and co-written by Thaddeus McWhinnie Phillips, who also serves as Set Co-Designer, with choreography by Lynne Kurdziel Formato and musical direction, arrangement, and orchestration by Isaac Saul. Felipe Gamba, who has been instrumental in the show’s development, co-wrote the book with Phillips and acts as Creative Producer.
Designers on the project include Michael Curry, known for his work on the masks and puppets for Disney’s ‘The Lion King’, who will once again bring iconic Disney characters to life. Other notable talents include Nthabiseng Malaka and Sofia Di Nunzio on costumes, David Seldes on lighting, Steve Cuiffo on illusions, Johanna Wilhelm for props and animated objects, Maxi Vecco on projections, Gaston Briski on sound, and Feliciano San Roman on wigs and makeup. South African Alistair Kilbee is the Technical Supervisor.
Hazel Feldman of Showtime Management expressed enthusiasm about the partnership with international producers.
Audiences can expect to be blown away by the innovative creativity, unique presentation, and the wonderful magic of Disney on stage in a musical.

Sofía Altuna from Fever also conveyed excitement, highlighting the success of the premiere in Buenos Aires and the global expansion of the show. Felipe Gamba emphasized the honour of showcasing South Africa’s exceptional musical theatre talent.
