There are few places quite as luxurious as Shamwari Private Game Reserve in the Eastern Cape. Boasting an array of wildlife, two different education and rehabilitation facilities, plus 6 luxury lodges, and 1 explorer camp, one of which being the new flagship tented camp, Sindile Safari Lodge, named after the matriarch of Shamwari’s leopards and the ancestor of the current leopard population in the reserve, who fought many a lion and whose stories make for great conversation around a boma fire.

Set along the Bushman’s River, overlooking vast plains and a watering hole, Sindile offers 9 premier luxury tents but could not be more removed from the concept of camping, as each tent is fully equipped with fans, WiFi, fireplace, air-conditioning, minibar, coffee station featuring a Nespresso machine, electronic safe, full en-suite bathroom with bath and shower (including one outside for those who enjoy baring it all in the bush) plus a divine plunge pool next to a pergola with a lounging area. In fact, the domestic wedding market is a new one for Shamwari, but one it hopes to develop. In addition to a choice of accommodation from luxury tented camps to lodges that can be exclusively booked for a wedding party, it offers a refurbished indoor banqueting venue and a choice of outdoor bomas.

The fly-in safari market is another that it is seeking to grow. Inquiries about this option have increased noticeably in the past year as well-heeled South Africans, fed up with the changing and inconsistent international travel rules, started looking for other options.

Shamwari has a 1,2km compacted gravel runway for fly-in safaris. It provides a bespoke service, where guests are collected from the steps of the aircraft and transferred in game vehicles to the lodge where they are staying.

Shamwari has certainly set a new benchmark for a luxury safari in South Africa and the addition of luxury tented camp, Sindile Safari Lodge, adds another experience to an already impressive lodge line-up.
