Recovery Of Cinema In South Africa With Entertainment Commentator Tat Wolfen
Each week, entertainment commentator Tat Wolfen joins the conversation to unpack the latest in movies, theatre, and the evolving state of South African cinema – and despite the doom-and-gloom headlines, cinema is far from dead.
Historically, cinema has weathered every disruption: from the arrival of television in the 1930s to home video, cable, and streaming. And still, it endures – because cinema is more than just watching a movie. It’s a modern campfire, where strangers gather in the dark to share stories, laugh together, gasp together, and experience a film the way it was meant to be seen.
This year, cinema is being reinvigorated with strong content and corporate resilience. Disney’s Thunderbolts and the live-action Lilo & Stitch have reignited audience interest. While Disney once faced criticism for oversaturating the market, its latest offerings are proving crowd-pleasers. Lilo & Stitch, in particular, is charming families with its nostalgic appeal and universal storytelling, outperforming even some high-octane blockbusters like Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning at the global box office.
But it’s not just about what’s on screen. Locally, the cinema industry is experiencing a strategic reshuffle. After a rough patch that saw Ster-Kinekor placed under business rescue, the chain has rebounded with plans to open four new cineplexes and refurbish existing ones, including Fourways Mall. Meanwhile, Nu Metro is expanding its footprint, taking over sites like Gateway in Umhlanga and Bedford Square in Johannesburg.
Even the viewing experience is being taken more seriously. Reports of dim projectors and underwhelming sound systems are being addressed, with a renewed focus on delivering crisp visuals, immersive audio, and warm hospitality – ensuring that every cinema visit feels like a special occasion.
Against the odds, cinema in South Africa is proving not only resilient but refreshingly adaptive – and the show, quite literally, goes on.
