Sandton Road Closures For Pride Village Event This Weekend

Ahead of the Pride Village event, several roads in Sandton will be temporarily closed from 8pm on Friday, 25 October 2024, until Sunday, 27 October 2024.

 

  • These closures will facilitate the setup and operations of Pride Village, a key element of the Pride of Africa 2024 event.
  • The event marks 35 years of LGBTQIA+ in Johannesburg this year.
  • Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) will manage traffic at strategic points to ensure safety.

The Pride Village, part of Johannesburg’s Pride March, will be taking place this weekend affecting several roads in Sandton. The Pride March, set for Saturday, 26 October 2024, will mark the LGBTQIA+ community’s journey from its first march in 1990. With the theme ‘Proudly African, Authentically You’, Pride of Africa 2024 is expected to attract thousands of participants, allies, and supporters onto Sandton’s streets.

The following roads will be affected:

  • West Street
  • Maude Street
  • Fredman Drive

 

Motorists are encouraged to use alternative routes:

  • 5th Street
  • Rivonia Road
  • Grayston Drive

 

The Pride March will kick off from West Street, winding through Sandton’s bustling streets, with performances from local and international artists. The event will also feature a marketplace, showcasing LGBTQIA+ businesses and creators. The day’s programme will conclude with evening entertainment. With road closures in place for most of the weekend to accommodate the event, motorists are encouraged to plan their journeys carefully.
