As fighter jets and military helicopters cut across the Sandton skyline, sleek motorcades glide through its streets, and hundreds of police officers stand guard at nearly every intersection, Africa’s richest square mile signals its full readiness to host the G20 Leaders’ Summit.
South Africa assumed the G20 Presidency on 1 December 2024, holding this esteemed role through November 2025. This tenure is particularly significant as it falls just five years before the critical 2030 deadline of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The urgency of this moment was starkly highlighted by UN Secretary-General António Guterres in April 2023 when he revealed that progress towards these goals has largely stalled globally, with only 12% of targets currently on track.
Under President Cyril Ramaphosa’s stewardship, South Africa is looking to steer the G20 towards meaningful, practical solutions that accelerate progress on the SDGs, emphasising sustainability, economic inclusion, and global cooperation. The summit in Sandton will serve as a pivotal platform for these ambitions to take concrete shape.

Known as the “richest square mile in Africa”, Sandton epitomises the blend of sophistication and vibrancy that makes it the ideal host for the G20 Leaders’ Summit. This district, home to high-end hotels, premier office spaces, luxury malls, and exclusive dining experiences, is well-prepared to welcome some of the world’s most powerful figures.
Sandton’s infrastructure provides seamless connectivity and security, while its cosmopolitan character offers visitors a glimpse into South Africa’s dynamic economy and rich cultural tapestry. The summit will also highlight local excellence in hospitality and business, underscoring the city’s status as a gateway to Africa’s economic future.
The G20 Summit brings together heads of state and government from 19 countries and two key regional organizations – the European Union (EU) and African Union (AU) – representing about 85% of global GDP and over two-thirds of the world population. Invited guests include leaders from Denmark, Egypt, Finland, Ireland, Malaysia (2025 ASEAN Chair), Netherlands, New Zealand, Nigeria, Norway, Portugal, Singapore, Spain, Switzerland, UAE, and Vietnam, among others. Their presence adds further depth and diversity to the conversations that will shape global economic and political policies.
The summit will also host key figures from important international organizations pivotal to development and economic stability. Their involvement reflects the summit’s comprehensive agenda, which extends beyond economics to include health, trade, climate change, sustainable development, and digital innovation. South Africa’s G20 Presidency is embodied in its logo, featuring the King Protea, the national flower and a symbol of resilience, hope, and cultural pride. The King Protea’s striking beauty also celebrates the natural splendour of South Africa, reminding participants of the rich heritage and diversity that the country offers to the world.
Founded in 1999 in the aftermath of the Asian financial crisis, the G20 began as a forum for Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors focused on international economic stability. It has since evolved to include discussions on a wide range of pressing global issues – trade, climate change, agriculture, health, energy, and anti-corruption – making it the foremost forum for global economic cooperation. In 2009, the G20 was elevated to the Leaders’ level, a recognition that the complexities of global crises require direct engagement from Heads of State and Government. This shift has solidified the G20’s role as a key platform for international collaboration on the biggest challenges facing the world today.
The G20 Presidency rotates annually among its member countries, grouped regionally to ensure continuity and representational balance. South Africa belongs to Group 2, which includes India, Russia, and Türkiye. The current troika for this Presidency comprises Brazil (immediate past), South Africa (current), and the United States (next). As Sandton welcomes global leaders, the focus will be on showcasing South Africa’s capacity for leadership, innovation, and partnership. Beyond hosting dignitaries in world-class hotels and dining venues, the summit will facilitate crucial dialogues that could accelerate global efforts toward economic stability, sustainable development, and equitable growth.

Residents and visitors can expect a number of temporary rolling, partial, and full road closures throughout this weekend (up until Sunday) as the city hosts the world’s most influential leaders. In support of large-scale security, logistical, and diplomatic operations, several key Sandton routes – including 5th Street, Maude Street, Daisy Street, Rivonia Road, Grayston Drive, and Katherine Street – will experience intermittent restrictions, with some areas closed entirely for short periods.
Beyond Sandton, joint traffic operations between 7:30am and 10am on 22 – 23 November 2025 will impact major corridors across Johannesburg, Tshwane, and Ekurhuleni, with rolling closures on the N1, N3, N12, M1, R21 South, and the R24/N12 junction. Significant restrictions are anticipated in Sandton, Melrose Arch, Rosebank, Fourways, Nasrec, and Roodepoort, while Grayston Drive will undergo a full closure on 22 November from 4am –10am, and the Golden Highway remains closed from 19 November 2025.
These measures form part of the extensive preparations ensuring seamless connectivity, security, and smooth movement for international delegations. As the city gears up to host this gathering of global leadership, all residents, commuters, and businesses are encouraged to plan ahead, allow additional travel time, and make use of alternative routes.
For South Africa, the G20 Presidency is more than an opportunity for international visibility – it is a chance to influence the global agenda in a manner that reflects African priorities and perspectives, amplifying the continent’s voice on the world stage. The 2025 G20 Leaders’ Summit in Sandton is set to be a landmark event, combining the best of South African hospitality, culture, and economic prowess with the collective wisdom and influence of the world’s leading nations.
