Jessica Nel, a 25-year-old graphic designer and social media manager, stood out not just for her beauty but for her deep commitment to promoting environmental sustainability, particularly in the realm of fashion. She advocates for sustainable fashion, blending her creative expertise with a strong focus on reducing environmental impact in the industry. But Jessica is far more than just an environmental advocate. She holds national colours for choir, is a drum majorette star, and has an advanced diving license.
With a year of environmental action ahead, the new Miss Earth South Africa and her fellow finalists will continue to drive change. Clean-up campaigns, sustainability workshops, and environmental advocacy in schools will be key focal points, as they champion causes such as ocean protection, food security, and sustainable fashion. Their work will not only raise awareness but also inspire a new generation of South Africans to become environmental stewards.
As part of her prize, Jessica will be flown to Manila, Philippines, by international airline partner Cathay Pacific, to represent South Africa at the 2024 International Miss Earth event on 9 November 2024. There, she will compete on a global stage, showcasing South Africa’s commitment to environmental leadership.
For over two decades, Miss Earth South Africa has provided a platform that transcends beauty, focusing on promoting environmental sustainability and empowering young women to be strong advocates for the planet. The programme has played a vital role in fostering environmental awareness, not only through education but by encouraging participants to take action in their communities.
The programme’s success is evident in the long list of achievements it has garnered over the years. To date, Miss Earth South Africa has planted over 57’000 trees and launched numerous environmental campaigns, including #WasteStopsWithME and #SaveWater. These initiatives are aligned with the national agenda on climate action, addressing critical issues such as waste management, water conservation, and environmental education.
The gala dinner at the Southern Sun, a long-standing partner of the organisation, was a celebration of these achievements. As the programme continues to grow, it remains at the forefront of environmental advocacy, reflecting the increasing global awareness of the need to protect our natural world.
