His latest production, My Favourite Broadway, marks not just another performance, but a heartfelt homecoming – one that sees this multi-award-winning musical theatre star light up the Teatro at Montecasino for a limited season, presented by Howard Events. And if there was ever a reason to dust off your theatre attire and head for the spotlight, this is it.

From his 2006 debut in Grease at the Barnyard Theatres, Jonathan Roxmouth’s rise to musical theatre stardom has been meteoric. With unforgettable turns in Rock Me Amadeus and The Buddy Holly Story, it was clear early on that this talent from South Africa had an extraordinary presence and vocal ability. That promise exploded into national recognition with A Handful of Keys, where his collaboration with Roelof Colyn under the direction of Ian von Memerty set the stage — quite literally — for what was to follow.

And follow it did. From playing Gaston in Beauty and the Beast, to Munkustrap in Cats, Judas in Jesus Christ Superstar, Joe Gillis in Sunset Boulevard, Sweeney Todd in Sweeney Todd, and Tony in West Side Story, Jonathan built a repertoire that many West End veterans would envy. But it was when he stepped into the Phantom’s mask that the world truly took notice. As the youngest English-speaking Phantom in history, Jonathan brought nuance and power to The Phantom of the Opera, earning the Broadway World Philippines Award and leading the show across two world tours from 2012 and again in 2019.

His international career has included standout roles in Chicago, Evita, and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, with performances across New Zealand, China, Hong Kong, and South Africa. Even while leading these iconic shows, Jonathan’s creativity has flourished in his original productions. From Lenny, Andrew, Steve and Me to Topsy Turvy, Key Change, Great Balls of Fire, and Piano State of Mind, Jonathan has proven himself not just as a performer, but as a producer, arranger, pianist, and storyteller. His shows are as musically intricate as they are emotionally moving, and audiences have responded with enthusiasm and standing ovations.

In My Favourite Broadway, Jonathan returns not only to the South African stage, but to a place of deep personal resonance. The show is a love letter to the musicals that have shaped him, performed alongside the newly-formed 32-piece Egoli Symphonic Orchestra under the baton of Maestro Adam Howard. It’s an ambitious production that reimagines the great Broadway classics with fresh orchestral arrangements, and brings together an artist at the peak of his powers with a world-class ensemble of musicians.

Audiences can expect a sweep through musical theatre history with numbers from Singin’ in the Rain, Funny Girl, My Fair Lady, Gypsy, Oliver! and more. Whether it’s a stirring anthem, a romantic ballad, or a show-stopping finale, each piece has been personally selected by Jonathan, and it shows. This isn’t just a performance – it’s a curated journey through the moments and melodies that have defined Broadway and defined him.

And for those who’ve followed his career, this concert is more than a treat – it’s a reunion. With his last major Johannesburg appearance being Swingle Bells in December 2023 – which saw over 12’000 attendees at the Teatro – the appetite for Jonathan’s return has been keenly felt.

Howard Events, long-time collaborators of Jonathan Roxmouth, are behind this special production.

It’s a true honour to welcome Jonathan back to the stage. We’ve worked with him for over a decade – from album productions to live concerts – and he remains one of South Africa’s most electrifying performers.

// Adam Howard

Adam Howard himself brings an illustrious career to the table, having trained at London’s Guildhall School of Music and performed with global legends like John Legend, Alicia Keys, and Hugh Masekela. As Sound Director and conductor for My Favourite Broadway, he brings both technical brilliance and personal connection to the show.

The show is just the start of what promises to be a landmark year for Jonathan. Following the concert season, he steps back into the courtroom drama and razzle dazzle of Chicago – The Musical, reprising the role of Billy Flynn. Having performed this role in New Zealand and China during the 2018/2019 world tour, Jonathan returns to it with renewed energy. The production opens at Cape Town’s Artscape Theatre on 27 August 2025 and runs until 28 September 2025, before moving to the Teatro from 3 October 2025 to 9 November 2025.

Having mostly been overseas since 2021, I have missed the South African audience very much. Not only their response but the way they generously welcome an artist on stage – it’s grown into a special relationship that I am looking forward to rekindling. I am beyond excited and so elated to be back performing some beautiful musical theatre material. To perform with Maestro Adam Howard and the Egoli Symphonic Orchestra elevates this concert to a once-in-a-lifetime show.

The excitement is tangible. South African audiences last saw him as Che in Evita in 2017. To see him now, after years of international success, bringing Broadway’s greatest hits to life on home soil, feels like a full-circle moment. From Grease in 2006 to CHICAGO in 2025, with Phantom of the Opera, Sweeney Todd, and Sunset Boulevard in between – the journey of Jonathan Roxmouth is not just a theatrical success story – it’s a celebration of talent, resilience, and pure passion for the stage.

With 11 studio albums to his name, a mantelpiece full of awards – including multiple Fleur du Cap, Naledi, and BroadwayWorld accolades – and a loyal following that spans continents, Jonathan Roxmouth remains a towering figure in musical theatre. And now, he’s back, not just to perform, but to remind us why we fell in love with musical theatre in the first place.

Tickets are now available at Webtickets, with early bird specials available for a limited time. For anyone who’s ever dreamed along with a Broadway score, this is not just another night out. It’s a celebration. It’s a homecoming. It’s Jonathan Roxmouth.
