You read it here first. The Sandton Times can be the first to reveal that Hamleys, the world’s finest toy shop, will be opening their 3rd South African shop, at Nelson Mandela Square in Sandton.

Hamleys rich history began with William Hamley, a Cornishman from Bodmin, England. Mr Hamley dreamed of opening the best toyshop in the world, which was realised when he opened his first shop at Holborn, London in 1760.

Following hot on the heels of the openings of their V&A Waterfront and Greenstone shops in August, which took social media by storm, the new Hamleys shop will open its doors just in time for Christmas, with all the fanfare one would expect from this iconic brand. Revellers are also invited to spread some holiday cheer, by donating a teddy (new or pre-loved) to fill up the huge wire-model of Hamley Bear, which will be passed on to less fortunate children in the local region.

“We are delighted to launch our third Hamleys toy shop at Nelson Mandela Square, an iconic and popular destination that caters to a wide South African audience. By inaugurating this strategic new location, we seek to meet the increasing demand for Hamleys’ high-quality selection of toys and to cater to our ever-expanding base of loyal customers. Shopping at Hamleys is a unique experience, and with our latest expansion, that experience is more accessible and convenient than ever.”

– Hamley’s South Africa CEO Philip Paphitis

In the magical world of Hamleys, toys are made to be touched, explored and brought to life in the imaginations of its VIP customers – children. Interactive displays and toy demonstrations, as well as guest appearances by iconic figures such as the Hamley and Hattie Bears, all contribute to the quintessential “Hamleys Experience” developed and refined over more than two centuries.

From the traditional to the high-tech, to games and puzzles, arts and crafts, magic tricks, and the Luvley Boutique stocked with glittering goodies, Hamleys offers more than 10,000 carefully selected toys guaranteed to excite children of all ages. The fun continues on Saturday December 12 when Hamleys invite all of their friends from the world of children’s favourite toy characters to join them for a parade around the square.

The parade will feature a host of iconic Hamleys characters including; Hamley & Hattie Bear, Toy soldier, rag doll, Hamleys princess, Ringmaster and Pirates! They will kick off the celebrations, marching through the square handing out free flags and high fives, leading customers to the new Hamleys Toy Shop! The public are encouraged to dress up as their favourite character and stand in line to win amazing prizes!

Hamleys as a global brand, is currently trading across 20 countries with 11 stores in the UK & Ireland and 50 international stores in cities including Moscow, Dubai, Mumbai, Istanbul, Mexico City, Ho Chi Minh City and Kuala Lumpur. The Hamleys opening follows a stream of new stores opening at Nelson Mandela Square including Forever 21 and Remo’s Libertà.
